It would appear the easy answer is Rickey Henderson. For his career, Rickey amassed 1,406 stolen bases. The next closest on the list is Lou Brock with 938. Of active players, the only ones who are close are Kenny Lofton with 615 and Barry Bonds with 513. However, both are over 40 and not likely to break Rickey's record. Carl Crawford would be the most likely to get near Rickey's record as he sits with 244 career stolen bases at the age of 25.

As for single season, Rickey is second to Hugh Nicol. In 1887, Hugh stole 138 bases. Rickey is number two on the list with 130. Third is held by Arlie Latham in 1887.

It's gonna be Ricky Henderson. I haven't seen anyone come close to stealing 100 bases in a season. Ricky did it three times, and totaled up over 870 stolen bases in just his first 10 seasons.

Unless the Flash decides the play baseball, I don't think his career total of 1406 stolen bases will be broken in my lifetime.

First round Hall of Famer for sure in 2009!!

The question is who was the best stolen base king -- Henderson was a terrible base runner truth be told.

The year he stole 130 he also was caught stealing (thrown out or picked off) 42 times also a record.

I saw guys like Davey Lopes, Joe Morgan and an older Lou Brock play the game and they had one thing in common -- instinct. They ran when they wanted to run only when the team needed it.

I remember 2 more guys who had a great showdown for the NL title in (I believe) 1978 or 79. Omar Moreno (PIT) outstole Ron Leflore (MTL) 98 to 97 ( or other way around -- going from memory here).

Henderson though longevity is undeniable, was not a good base stealer.

It's Rickey Henderson, of course. ML record 1406 steals at an 80% success rate.

HOF 2009. I hope the good folks at the Hall remember to put "The Man Of Steal" on his plaque.
