What would the mother had to have done to be involuntarily committed to a mental institution? Would she had to have committed a crime? How can a family member have control over an individual?

Crimes land people in jail. A family may commit someone to a mental institution or drug rehabilitation center if they feel they are a danger to themselves or others.

It is called involuntary commitment.

Im assuming as in Committed you're speaking of a mental health facility? To determine that, the mother would have been evaluated by a doctor to the state of her mental health, and if deemed that she cannot choose for herself or take care of herself, the family can have the doctor commit her on her behalf to an institution that can take care of her and her needs. this would be due toe the Doctor's discretion and on his advice.

The family would have to sign a petition stating they feel she is a threat to self or others - and they can hold her on a 72 hour involuntary commitment - beyond that you need a hearing and a doc to speak to diagnosis and potential threat.

No crime need be committed.

If someone is at risk for harming them-self or others you can get a judge to sign papers to have them committed to a facility for help. Once the papers are signed the individual has no say in the matter.

It can be done but I highly suggest you remember Mom will only be there for 3 days and then they cant make her stay any longer.
