Preferrably novels without a lot of descriptive sex.

I've already read the classics (Jane Austen - the Brontes etc)

In the 60s I eagerly read everything by Jan Westcott, who wrote great romantic, loosely historical novels; such as, The Queen's Grace and The Hepburn. I recommend them highly, but unless you live in a town with a library that keeps really old books you might not be able to find them. Perhaps you can locate them on Ebay. I recently found an out of print historical novel on reincarnation for my daughter there, for really cheap. Good luck! If you can get them, you'll love them!

Note: I just remembered my favorite historical author, Mary Renault. Her novels are set in ancient Greece and the best are on the Theseus legend, The King Must Die and The Bull From the Sea. I recommend these highly, also. (read them in order)

If the emphasis is on romance, and you are an Austen fan, try Georgette Heyer. If you are looking for historical fiction with romantic elements, let me strongly recommend Gillian Bradshaw. There is a wealth of material set in many eras; have fun exploring!
