...abandonment

What they're doing is called abuse. They usually know they're hurting you and do nothing to stop the behavior.
You could try seeing a counselor together. If the behavior does not change, it's time to move on. Your staying with that person only gives them the message that their abusive behavior is okay and this only enables them to do it more.
Perhaps leaving is the greatest act of love you can do. This will send a strong message that something needs to change if the person wants a lasting relationship with anybody. If they truly love you, they will do their best to change how they treat people they're supposed to love. If it doesn't, that shows a lack of love and respect for you.
I know you were looking for an answer on what you can do to make it better, but abusers rarely change for their partners. You really do deserve better than that. I don't suggest "finding someone else" but perhaps you need time away from any relationship to think over the value of your happiness and why you are attracted to someone who does not value you.

A selfish person is blinded by self absorbed behaviour!
They don't understand a persons worth until they are no longer there!
If a person claim 2 love u there is no room for selfishness...they want 2 give and make you happy...that's apart of loving
Love is a unselfish act with lots of sacrifices

I have about decided that you will never be able to help this kind of person realize it. They just aren't programmed to think of others other than themselves. I seriously have come to decide that they were raised to care about themselves and no amount of education or self realization is going to change it.

I wonder if watching someone die as a result of their selfishness would even make a difference. With some? yes.... with others? *throws hands up* There is just no telling.

(sorry....... this one hit a recent nerve..... could you tell?)

It may never happen unless it is revealed to the selfish person. Sometimes people claim they are good even though they are being evil.

I don't know, because I've never been a selfish person when it comes to my love one... Does it makes them happy to be with that person even if he's suffering from their love?...

when the ones they love no longer put up with them....if possible, put as much distance into the relationship as possible, or start saying NO, or tell them exactly how you feel and let them know you are not going to put up with it anymore-then follow through. it may help them realize they aren't the only person in their world

Thats the problem, if they are truely selfish they will not ever care enough to really ever truely love like others do.

They have to hit rock-bottom in their life before they actually think of what they are doing to themselves and/or to others...I guess my first thought to your question was thinking of someone w/ an addiction who hasn't asked for help yet.
