I believe the conspiracy theory revolves around the insurances taken out on the ships and that Britannic was thought to have been built badly and it was suggested it would sink ,so the names were removed along with all identification markings and swapped over with the Titanic, and it was the Britannic that was involved with a large iceberg whilst the Titanic was still in it`s Harland and Wolfe docks. The insurance was paid out and all was well with the White Star Line.
But I think there is little evidence to support this theory.

The Titanic definately sunk. The Britannic was sunk by a Turkish sea mine five years later, while serving as a Hospital ship in world war I. The Olympic had a long and successful career and was scrapped in 1935. In any case, think about how much effort it would be to claim that one particular ship sank when in fact it was another of the same class. The fact that there were thousands of people with an interest in the ship, over 4,000 passengers and crew, and lots of media attention surrounding the maiden voyage of such an impressive vessel would have made it impossible to conceal the ship's identity - and anyway, what would be the purpose of sinking the Britannic or the Olympic instead of the Titanic? It's not a conspiracy theory, it's just stupid.

Like all conspiracy theories a small incident is blown up out of all proportion and made to fit a bizarre conspiracy.
This probably comes from the fact that the Olympic, which was the first of the Olympic class, had an inauspicious start to her career. Not long after her launch she was involved in a collision with a royal Navy ship in Southampton HMS Hawke, in what became known as the Hawke incident. This was caused by the massive displacement of the Olympic 'sucking' the smaller ship towards it. Both ships where badly damaged, Olympic suffering a hull breech causing flooding and a bent propeller shaft.
The ship had to return to Harland and Wolfe for repairs, which resulted in a delay of the building of the Titanic. Soon after this she lost a propeller which again resulted in repairs at Harland and Wolfe which fitted Olympic with a propeller destined for Titanic.
One crew member, Violet Jessop, was present at the Hawke incident as well as the sinking of the Titanic and the sinking of the Britannic. Now that's what I call unlucky, but if anyone could disprove the Conspiracy theorists it would be her if she was still alive. I doubt CT'ers would listen to evidence though, in their eyes making up nonsense like this is much more interesting.

The White Star Line built 3 "Olympic Class" Liners to travel the Southampton-NYC route to compete with Cunard's Lusitanian and Mauritania.
They were built in order, Olympic, Titanic and Brittannic.
The Olympic launched in 1911 sailed the Atlantic and was a favourite of many until the new Cunard Ship, Queen Mary was launched. The Olympic was scrapped without fanfare in the mid 1930's.
Titanic did really sink. It was an accident brought about by unusual circumstances. Heavy ice packs in the northern polar route which was changed to a more southerly route later, the maiden voyage, ego of the owner, J Bruce Ismay who wanted to get the liner into NYC earlier for the morning papers, ill equipped marine laws addressing life boat issues based upon size of ship (10 000) tons and not the larger liners. A ship of 10 000 tons and a ship of 45 000 tons legally had to have the same number of lifeboats, poor rivets which were brittle in the cold Atlantic made from poor quality iron and bad navigational practices where ice packs were not a threat to reduce speed by law. Marconi operators of the wireless were not 24 hour operations, they slept at night like everyone else.
The Brittannic, was never a trans atlantic liner. She was converted into a hospital ship and sank in the Kea channell during world War 1 on the way to pick up wounded soldiers. Many thought she was sunk by a U-boat, but increasing evidence suggests she struck a mine when crews were changing shifts, thus her watertight doors were open as were many of the port holes to cool the ship as she was not made for tropical weather.
Any conspiracy theory might surround the Brittannic, but I suspect you may be thinking of the sinking of the Lusitania where she was sunk by one torpedo and sank in less than 20 minutes. It is suspected she was carrying munitions for the war effort but many of the key documents relating to the Lusitania sinking are still classified by the British Admiralty. Many think the Lusitania was sunk with the help of the British who did not give her adequate escout coverage once she entered british waters. It has been said secretly the Admiralty wanted the ship sunk to bring America into the War.

Just found this question so I'm coming up on the rear to put a couple of things straight.
The Olympic was broken up at Wallsend on the River Tyne and the panels from her ballroom can be seen in The White Swan Hotel In Alnwick.
All White Star Line Ships were given names ending in IC as in Titanic, Britannic, Olympic, Atlantic and Oceanic.
All Cunard ships names ended in IA such as The Mauritania and The Lusitania until the two companies merged on May 10th 1934 to become the Cunard White Star Line.
There was no conspiracy or at least not enough evidence to prove anything untoward.

Yes, the Titanic really did sink around 2 in the morning on April 15, 1912 after hitting an iceburg the night before.
One of her sister ships was used as a battle ship and sunk durring World War I.
Another sister ship is in a museum.

there is a conspiricy theory for every major event in History. Yes the titanic sank, no it was not the the Olympic or Britannic. the Olympic went on to sail the seas for 20 more years, it was smaller than the Titanic, and not as luxurious. same withthe Brittanic, that sailed for years, and was sunk in WWI. they where sister ships, not Identical ships. the Titanic was the most luxurious ship and largest at the time, the Olympia was three years older and one hundred feet shorter, and had three stacks, the Brittanic was shorter also, and pretty plain jane when it came to accomadations. I think there is a room with all these conspiracy nut jobs, who just make sites about things such as this, knowing most people know very little, and they twist the facts.

I know which conspiracy you're talking about. Some people think the Olympic was sailed instead of the Titanic. The evidence they cite for this revolves around the windows. The plans for the Titanic showed it having less windows than the ship that actually sailed. So although a liner sank, and it had titanic written on it, it wasn't actually the Titanic herself. Please, 705 people survived to testify that the Titanic sank, not to mention all the radio traffic while it was happening.
The Britannic was sunk in WWI in the Mediterranean while functioning as a hospital ship. That may be the conspiracy theory you are thinking about. The English sometimes claimed that she was sunk by a Uboat torpedo, despite the fact she was a hospital ship, and there is some evidence the Germans thought she was carrying active soldiers and/or war materiels in defiance of rules for hospital ships; however, it is fairly widely accepted now that she hit a submerged mine and sank, with actually very little loss of life.
Or, you may be thinking of the Lusitania, also WWI era, because there are many conspiracy theories about her sinking.
Of the three White Star sister ships, the Olympic was the only one to outlive her service and be scrapped.

No, it was the Titanic of the White Star Line that sank after colliding with an iceberg. Bob Ballard of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution discovered her at the bottom of the sea not long ago. Her sister ship, the Britannic, also sank as the result of war actions.
The conspiracy arises from the fact that the largest liners of the times sank in a relatively short period of time, giving rise to suspicions that they had been singled out for destruction by some other military power envious of Great Britain's control of the seas. Let's see....who might that have been? Perhaps Germany? Or maybe it was just the rival Cunard Lines whose Mauritania and Lusitania were also sunk?
