So I'm doing this art class, and I love working with charcoal, but only the chalky kind...I think my art teacher has some of the "condensed" (i dont know what you call it) kind, but it's like a rectangular prism and it's...I don't know, I just don't like it, it's not as soft or as easy to blend, I guess. But when I'm doing details on drawings, it's hard to get the effect I want with a piece of chalk. So I'm wondering if they make pencils with a softer charcoal material, or if I would just have to get a file and sharpen a piece of charcoal down to a point : /

Before you stick a burnt twig into a pencil sharpener, may I suggest finding a local art supply store. You really seem to know exactly what you want and need. And I'm sure that if you were to take this well written question to a professional art supply store (not a craft store) they could show you a number of pencils and even let you try them out before choosing which ones to buy. May your talent continue to grow!

any "art supplies" store should have them. Michael's or A.C. Moore are two big chains here in New England.
