Love it Martin, that does make sense. Like take dating for instance, you give a gift and expect a give, wrong but true.
Christmas, it's better to Give then to recieve, but everyone knows you damn well receive a gift shortly after.
The only free gift I can think of is not one of material but from the heart. Don't be mad at me for getting all sappy, but it's the gifts of kindness, understanding, love that are free. You help someone in need and the gift you recieve is intrinsic (satisfaction within).
That's all I got.

I agree with the assessment that a "free gift" is a sales incentive, you buy x, and get y as a "free gift...basically a bonus - the cost of which is hidden in the price of x.
A gift is a present given from one to another to mark an occasion, or to express love/gratitude, or as the nurse icon noted, a talent.

A gift could be one that has strings attracted. Such as I gave you one now what are you going to give me.
A free gift is just that, having nothing attacked to it, not expecting anything. The free gift of God is Jesus Christ. He gave us this gift while we were yet in our sins and hated Him. This was His love for us and it had no strings attacked.

I would say that a gift is something that you thought of yourself, and purchased yourself, a free gift is something that was maybe given to you as a gift, and you 'recycled' the gift. You would have recieved it as a gift or won it! Believe me, I win stuff all of the time and give it away as a gift!

I have always thought of "gifts" as individual talents that one uses. When I "give" something to someone, it is that item I am giving, have never called it a gift.
I find it interesting that there are those of you who think that "gifts" are never free.....depending on your definition of the word and how you use it, it could be very comical. ;)

There is no such thing as a free gift!
Even when someone gives you something for free they are expecting some thing in return!

Yes.. a free gift is a gift that the person who gave it to you didn't have to pay for and a gift: the person had to pay for it...

Yes, "free gift" is a redundancy. Right up there with "ATM machine" and "PIN number" (personal identification number number?)
