I'm not sure that the Maldives are sinking, probably more that the oceans are rising. Certainly ocean levels have risen by about 3mm a year and this will be contributing. The highest point in the Maldives is just 800mm above sea level and as ocean levels are rising faster than they used to be it will only be about 150 years before the last part of the last island is submerged.

Some islanders (I don't know if the Maldives is included), have a practice of dynamiting the surrounding coral reefs, this exposes the islands to the effects of the seas and oceans and unwittingly they are contributing to their own demise.

You are correct.... Or should I say they are correct. Apparent;y something like 80% of the Maldives is less than 1 metre above sea level. With greenhouse effect in full swing and rising sea levels at an estimated 1cm a year doing the math will tell you that in 100 years the islands will be under water.

The captial city "Male" has a 3 metre wall built around it. Not to prevent the sinking obviosult but to avaiod tidal surges from tidal waves and such. If you have never been go visit it as it is really beautiful.

It may be that the ocean is rising. The Maldives extend only a few feet above sea level, so any change in the relative elevation would be a problem there.
