The Alex Kava books are good... hmm... John Douglas and Anne Rule when it comes to true crime, of course. Death by Sunset is one of my favorite Anne Rule books (I saw the movie and it was interesting to get more details). False Memory by Dean Koontz is good too. Oh and The Art of Breaking Glass by Matthew Hall!
If you don't mind supernatural, the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris has mystery and romance elements.
And if you go to www.allreaders.com you can search within genres to specify a book with certain plot/character traits you like. A lot won't be in libraries but you can probably buy most of them if you don't mind spending money.

New in general or new to you? And do you count fantasy with sci-fi?
Have you read Dorothy L Sayers? The Lord Peter mysteries (Whose Body? is the 1st one). Also in mystery would be Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey.
Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books have a nice mix of romance & the supernatural (time-travel, not by machine, tho).
Legacy by Susan Kay--a fictional biography of Elizabeth I.
Mercedes Lackey--writes fantasy; try Children of the Night (urban fantasy/suspense--vampires on the streets of New York in the 70s, then Burning Water (written 1st--Aztec gods) & Jinx High (a strangely accomplished teen-age witch), all starring Diana Tregarde as an occult investigator who writes romances to pay the bills.).

Romance/family saga try Lynda Page, Dee Williams, Pamela evans. Lesley Pearse is fantastic too.
For thrillers, Patrick Redmond "all she ever wanted" is great
Mandasue Heller, Martina Cole, Sheila Quigley, Lisa Gardner, Denise Ryan.
True stuff, Torey Hayden "one child" is superb
Joan Hannington "I am what i am", true story of her life as she swallows diamonds for a living!
And 2 other very good reads "Johnny Angel" by Danielle Steel and "My best friends girl" by adele parks
Happy Reading!!

My favorites are: Patricia Cornwell, Lisa Jackson, Lisa Gardner, Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and Sandra Brown. All of them are thrillers except for Sandra Brown. She's a romance writer. Check them out.. you'll like them. Good Luck!

I've heard Tasha Alexander's books are good. There is one right now that's new called 'A Poisoned Season'. It was described to me as sort of like Jane Austen, but also with mystery.

i enjoy books by douglas preston and lincoln child but only the ones that they write together, not the ones that they write on their own. start with relic, reliquary, cabinet of curiosities and still life with crows (in that order)
most books by michael crichton: congo, sphere, jurassic park, the lost world, timeline, jurassic park 3, prey, state of fear
many books by dean koontz- watchers, the frankenstein series, the "odd" series and many others that i can't think of right now but i have rarely been disappointed by one of his books.
