too many programs up and running

how long has it been since you scan disked and defragged?

START
My Computer
right click – Local Disc (C:)
left click – Properties
choose 2nd tab – TOOLS
error Checking – click CHECK NOW
put check marks in both boxes
click – START (NOW- you will probably get a message saying you need to restart your computer – because this program wants to be the BOSS! – click YES)

also from here
Defragmentation – click Defrag Now
Click – Analyze – within seconds it will tell you if you need to - - if it says you are ok – FINE – if not – defrag – this will put
files back into closer proximity to make them work faster – when complete

restart your computer to make Scan Disk work

Best of Luck

you don't know for sure that your computer is free of viruses, spyware, root kits, trojans.

Though a fragmented hard disk or an almost full hard disk can slow things down a bit, the most common cause is malware. Malware has many ways of hiding so you won't see it under processes.

Do the normal maintenance (disk cleanup, browser cache cleanup, disk defragment) following by a full antivirus scan (be sure to download the latest updates), a malware/spyware scan (use free windows defender from microsoft if you don't have one, or look for a better one).

Also do windows update - see if you have the latest OS patches. Most monthly updates include the (basic) malware scan and removal tool.

How many other (legit) things do you have running? AOL takes up resources. Multiple media players take up resources. Over time new features in WIndows XP require more memory. 512 MB is OK but 1 GB is better.

The hard disk might be full. Delete all temporary/unuseful files, use CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/download/ Keep the hard disk/partition where Windows is installed, to 50% free space.

Another idea: if your computer is pretty old, you might need to upgrade the RAM. http://www.crucial.com/
