I'm looking to make a cute baby blanket for my unborn baby. I still have mine that my mom made for me before I was born and I would like my baby to have it as a keep sake later in life.
I need some suggestions regarding the type of "fabric" I should use. I don't mind spending money on something expensive as long as it's long lasting and good quality. I was thinking about cashmire for a while, do you think it would be suitable for a blanket for a newborn?
Last question, where can I get good quality materials to knit the blanket? Are there any "luxury fabric stores" either online or regular one that somebody can recommend me? Thanks a bunch!

It's called crocheting (pronounce "kro - SHAY - ing")or just crochet, and you can use any kind of yarn, the same as for knitting. Pure cashmere is a bad choice because it can't be cleaned, and because the fibers come off, and baby will breathe them in. You should look for a nice baby yarn. (or wool, as you brits call it. But it won't always be made of wool.)

I'm sorry to tell you this but there are tons of problems with your question...
First off, you can't knit a blanket with a crochet hook...You can crochet a blanket with the hook, or you can knit one with some needled, but they are not interchangeable...
Cashmere, in my opinion, would be a very bad option for a baby blanket...Unless you have something like a christening shawl in mind (ie. something that you will wrap the baby in for a short time for pictures or something like that and then put away for safekeeping), baby blankets should be an easily washable material...Honestly, I would go with an acrylic or blend that is machine washable and would require minimum blocking of the finished object...
If you are new to knitting/crocheting, I would recommend finding an easy baby blanket pattern and some yarn at someplace like Michael's or Hobby Lobby...There will be pattern booklets and entire books devoted to simple, quick baby needlework...Also, these stores have very nice beginner yarns (especially Hobby Lobby)...

Cashmere is a bad choice for a baby blanket. It is fragile, cannot be washed, and sheds fibers that an infant would inhale. Most wools do not wash well--they felt up and get stiff and itchy.
There are many soft yarns, mostly synthetic, that are washable, sturdy, and easy to work with--either in crochet or knitting.
I have made dozens of baby blankets of soft acrylic that have held up well for years of wear. They do end as keepsakes, so you want something that will not get ratty with wear.

For a baby I would suggest using a washable yarn. Something out of cotton or acrylic or superwash wool. I know that Lion Brand's Cotton Ease (a cotton/acrylic blend) has gotten good ratings from knitters and crocheters alike.
Some people tend to shy away from wool and other animal hair yarns for babies until they know that the child is not allergic. Then there is the whole washability process and handwashing items (more like soaking as agitation will cause fulling/felting) of cashmere, wool, etc. Read your yarn labels carefully to see if you will have to handwash your items. And to see if a wool yarn is superwash or not.

You can only crochet with a crochet hook. You knit with knitting needles. Any soft yarns will be fine for a baby blanket. Bernat baby yarns, Red Heart baby yarns, patons and caron simply soft to name a few. The softer the better. Make sure the yarn is washable and dryable. It will get messed up. Happy Hooking!

I would not use cashmere for a blanket for a baby. I would use a yarn like Red Heart or a cotton yarn.

Use baby wool it is designed for babies in mind and it is hypoallergenic and soft too.
