They set a record low for Game 1[6.3 11 share] and Game 2 goes against the Sopranos. Is this sport on its way to hockeyland?

It is the age of Tivo and DVR. The games are on 9:15 EST and dont end till midnight. There were also 25k viewers watching 1 screen at Quicken Loans arena last night.

Not really. Consider the 2 teams that are playing in the Finals. The Spurs are a great team, but they are a boring team. Parker drives for a layup. Duncan posts up and holds the ball for a minute before running their half court offense. No flashy players who can excite the crowd. On the other end, you have Lebron James and thats about it. People know the Spurs are gonna man handle the Cavs and that Lebron alone can't stop them. The outcome of the series is given so whats the point of watching? To see how competitively the Cavs can keep the Spurs from winning games by 20? I love basketball, but these 2 teams facing each other don't really interest me.

Believe it or not, there aren't "a lot" of NBA fans, well, when compared to other sports. Basketball played as a team does not attract as many viewers as Basketball played by individuals. Viewers seem to put individual flair on a pedestal, above Team Accomplishments. With Jordan, there were many viewers that weren't exactly Basketball fans, they drove up the ratings. Since his retirement, ratings went down and the NBA is scouring the Earth for anything that might get those fans back: Phoenix Suns, Golden State-like Basketball, and then of course, LeBron. The NBA seems to think he's the answer for their ratings woes, but non-basketball fans aren't going to watch if he's kept in check like he is right now with San Antonio. The ratings for the finals appear to be dismal, mainly because Team Basketball is keeping LeBron from exploding.

That's why the push to go international is stronger today than it was before. The NBA will try to get their viewers wherever they can.

The Finals are a total mismatch.

But, most American pro sports (where you have pre-set conferences) run the risk of having something like this happen.

The season is long enough that you don't need conferences or divisions....:

There's 30 teams in the league. Everyone plays 3 games against each of the other 29 teams. That ups the schedule from 82 to 87 games.

Then, the top 16 make the playoffs, and your top two seeds won't meet until The Finals.

No, but sports telecast ratings have steadily dropped over the past several years. Frankly, there is a saturation of too many sports on TV. And when one of the teams in the finals is from the 40th largest media market in the country, well, that doesn't help.

I'm a hardcore fan and I hate the way they do advertisements, promotions, and interviews with Eva Longoria during the play-by-play. I'm losing interest because it isn't about the game any more....its about trying to turn sports personalities into celebrities. And I can't stand that.

Too long a gap before game 1; game 2 was just stupid. Now the series is 2-0 and unless Cleveland wins the next game or LeBron puts on a show, it's over and no one outside SA or CLeveland is going to care.

Come on people please stop with this denial BS. You think just the T.V. Ratings are down for the finals? Well guess what the T.V. Ratings have been down pretty much the whole damn playoffs with a few exception games, not series, GAMES. The entire NBA season has been scarred with some of the worst T.V. ratings EVER. This is by far one of the least watched NBA seasons EVER! So how can it surprise anyone that the NBA Finals T.V. ratings are down? The truth is nobody is watching the NBA anymore, well not like they use to. I mean the 1999-2000 season for example the NBA Finals were pulling 11.0 Overnight Ratings and people were saying the ratings were way down and that the NBA was in trouble, but sh*t an 11.0 T.V. rating now would be a f*cken dream to the NBA, that is how bad things have gotten. As I said before, people just are not watching the NBA anymore and it is just going to get worse.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that the San Antonio Spurs are a boring team, and it is pretty much a sure thing that the Spurs will win, and also these two teams are both from smaller markets, but I am telling you it doesn't really matter who is playing, the T.V. Ratings for NBA are going to be bad no matter how you look at it. Sure a Laker vs. Miami Heat Final would be awesome and would pull off much higher T.V. ratings than this sh*t we have now, but believe me, not even a Miami Heat vs. Los Angeles Lakers finals (which would quite possibly be the best Final the NBA could hope for) would pull off comparable T.V. ratings to the 1999-2000 season which at the time were considered poor ratings.

I am sorry, and I know there are some passionate NBA Fans here, but seriously you guys are stuck in some thick layers of denial if you do not believe the NBA is heading downhill and very fast. Hockey is another sport with some passionate fans and great attendance, and Nationally you know what, nobody gives a f*ck. I live in So-Cal where the Ducks just won the Stanley Cup, and you know what, nobody cares. The NBA is heading in the same direction.

Why don't people watch the NBA anymore? Well I've thought about this and there are multiple reasons. One is that people are not watching as much sports on television anymore like they use too. Pretty much all the leagues and sports have seen large decrease television ratings (except for the NFL and College Football). I believe there are just so many other things to watch on television and then there is the internet and so much more that competes for our hearts and minds, it is just much more competition for the NBA and other sport leagues. Another reason for the decline of the NBA is the way that the NBA has always been marketed, Players first and Teams second. This is a great strategy that worked with Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and others, but now people just aren't in love with Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and other like they were with past players. For some reason, I just don't get all exicted when I see LeBron and Kobe square off, not like when Larry and Magic went head to head. My last reason, is people are falling out of love with the sport, not playing it, but watching it. People love to play sports, but watching it is another story, and this quickly becoming the reality of the NBA. Why is this happending, because I believe in their rush to make more money the NBA has plain out hurt the game of Basketball as a whole. Agree with me or not, but players spending at least two years in college before going to NBA not only helped the NBA, not only helped College Basketball, but helped Basketball period. I think people loved the past players so much more than the players of today, because we had a chance to follow their careers from college to the NBA, to better relate to them. We never saw Kobe or LeBron play college and our first real introduction to them was in the NBA. It is like the NBA has taken away all the foreplay and jumped right into the sex. Seriously I just do not relate well with Kobe and LeBron, I just think of them as some spoiled rich NBA players. Perhaps I would enjoy Kobe even more if I saw him take the winning shot for the UCLA Bruins in the Final Four Championship against Duke. Or maybe I would love LeBron even more if I saw him shed some tears because his Michigan Wolverines were eliminated in the Sweet Sixteen by a freak buzzer beater. My point is there was no foreplay, just some sex and you know what, the sex really isn't that great.

I know most of you die hards will not agree with anything I say, but it is cool, because you know what the lack of interest for the NBA and the lack of television ratings for the NBA, and the lack of revenue for the NBA, prove my point for me. Yes I agree (except for the NFL and College Football) all sport leagues have seen declines in television audienc, but no league has plummeted so far and so fast as the NBA has.

İ think its because that the Spurs concentrate on Defense to much for example if it was to Offense based team like the Suns etc the rating would be higher and when LBJ came out with a bad game nobody cared about it

People aren't watching because everyone knows this seriies was over before it began and the Spurs are boring.

Add the facts that the Spurs bullied their way into the Finals (David Stern is an idiot) and that neither San Antonio or Cleveland are major, major markets and you can see why people are staying away in droves.
