Well, I think it's a way for people to socialize after the funeral, because the funeral itself is very quiet and somber.

We do? I usually just eat when I am hungry. Of course eating together establishes a bond with the sharing of food. Probably an ancient primate thing; one of the acts that lead to civilization.

Food makes us feel better...if you didn't like the person, it is easier to hide the joy you feel that they are gone....if you liked the person it is hard to cry in public with food in your mouth...
