His "Bernard Thompson", the hotel manager, was the perfect boss. I wouldn't want to be him as much as work for him. You see "Vivian's" (Julia Roberts) transition from backwoods hooker to society debutante through his eyes and his attitude to toward her. I always get a charge out of his going from letting her know that she was never to return to that hotel to hoping that she'd return sometime for a visit. It also chokes me up when he provides "Edward" (Richrd Gere) the angle to go get her by commenting on how hard it must be to let go of something so beautiful (necklace/Vivian) and then reminding him that the hotel chaufeur knows where she lives. So understated, so perfect.

Much better casting that either Gere or Roberts.

Who's with me? Any other underappreciated movie roles?

...you can pretty much chalk it up to the casting directer associate with the films produced and directed by Garry Marshall; having appeared in many of Marshall's films, Hector always seems to shine in whatever character he plays, sometimes more so than the main stars, despite being cast in small, albeit eclectic and interesting roles.

For other Hector Elizondo's standout performances, comparable to that of "Pretty Woman", you might want to try 1986's "Nothing in Common", 1994's "Exit to Eden" and "1996's "Dear God", all of which have also been commandeered by director Garry Marshall.

Yes, I really liked Hector Elizondo in the movie. Similar roles can be found in several movies which have good actors playing the side roles such as Rosie O'Donell in Titanic, Maggie Smith in the Harry Potter movies etc.

Isn't that the same kind of role he played in "The Princess Diaries?" He's good at what he does, but he's certainly a type-cast actor.

His role was critically acclaimed, so he got his props. It's what got him other roles.

Any other underappreciated roles? I can only think of the guy who played Joe Jr. on "While You Were Sleeping." It was a hilarious supporting role that makes the movie all the more memorable.
