I was thinking of getting a TIVO, but I was wondering if anyone out there has one and what they think of it. Also do you have to have a special service through you cable company it order for it to work, or can you just plug it in and your good to go. I have had a DVR and I really loved it, but it was just to expensive and I gave it back. Does TIVO work the same way or does it just record T.V.? Thanks for any imput.

Hi Mom,

I prefer TiVO because of simplicity of use. We love them. Their schedule is always correct because it is updated every day. I can program TiVO to record from out of town over the Internet. TiVO learns what you like and recommends shows that you might like. Often times we never would have known they were on. You can program an entire season of a given series with a single click and TiVO never forgets. You can tell TiVO you like someone or something and it will locate shows for you. For example if you tell it you like John Wayne it will watch for and record anything he is on.

I could go on and on about TiVO. There is one downside and that is the monthly (you can pay yearly if you want) fee. It is currently $8.31 a month with a three year purchase.

You do not need anything special from the cable company. I use our TiVo's with Comcast and they wouldn't know if I had them or not. You connect it to your cable & your TV and you are all set. No harder then hooking up a VCR.

To learn all about TiVO check their web site here - https://www3.tivo.com

Check the TiVO user forum here - http://www.tivocommunity.com

I hope this helps you make the best decision.

Tivo works better than almost any DVR out there. It can be networked to your homes wired/wireless network which allows for scheduling your Tivo over the internet in case you cannot make it hoem in time. You can also transfer the shows/movies from the Tivo to a PC over your homes network very quickly. Here is a link to describe some other differences between a Tivo and a DVR.

Now Tivo is a seperate charge from your cable provider. So this can be more expensive. direcTV used to have DirecTV Tivo's which was the DVR they offered, There was no extra price for thiese Tivo's other than the $5 a month DVR service charge. Now DirecTV only sells their own model DVR's and got away from working with Tivo, these models do NOT work like a Tivo either..

I hope this helps you figure thinngs out. If you have any more questions please feel free to send me an email..

I don't personally have TiVo, but I like the idea behind it. There are often times when two shows are on and I would like to watch both. (I had to quit watching Crossing Jordan because they cahnged time slots and my wife and I both liked the other show) There are also times when I miss the first 10 or 15 minutes of a show because of my work schedule. I don't have TiVo, but I think the idea is very nice. Especially since I can't program my VCR, due to the fact that I am using a replacement remote. The VCR is just as good as TiVo, but only if someone is there to turn the thing on.

TiVo is great. You don't need anything special; however, you do need to hook it up to a phone line. I got a wireless phone jack for $30 which works great.

You use the phone line to download/upload information services, like what programs you want to record, changes to your season passes, etc.

You can use it to record TV, copy programs to your computer, rent movies and have them sent directly to the unit, etc. Go to the TiVo website for more info.

The standard monthly rate is $12.
