To keep yourself motivated, toward what?
1) To start with you must have a goal, a dream. Like the song says, "If you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?"
2) Next you must write it down.
3) Then you must visualize that dream, never take your eye off of it. (the best way to do this is to re-write it every day and read it at least twice--when you wake up and before going to bed.
4) Next you must do something toward that goal everyday.
So here's a real example. Let's say I want to become a guitarist. That's my dream. I start out by writing that down. I include a date that I expect to be arrive there. Then I visualize it: What type of music do I want to play. Will play for myself at home, or will I be a rock god on stage in front of thousands of people? Will I be on broadway, or in a folk band? Will I be impressing my friends with my skills? How will playing the guitar affect my life. WIIFM (what's in it for me?)
Then I do something everyday -- maybe I practice everyday, may be I take a lesson on a regular basis, say once per week. When I practice, maybe I have a routine, some scales, some note reading, some finger exercises, play the same song every day, till I master it then move to a new song. Eventually I have to get where I'm going.
But the process keeps me learning, keeps me progressing, keeps me interested in continuing, therefore, I'm motivated
This process can be applied to any endeavor in life.

Keep focussed on the big picture (what you are trying to do/ acheive) as well as each step at a time along the way. Also, if you are doing it for people you care about or for some other good reason, think about that. Maybe there are people you know or know about that inspire you because of their personal traits and achievements (try to be more like them). Or maybe if you don't meet your objective, something bad will happen and that can be a motivating factor. In some situations listening to the right sort of music can help. It helps too if you are fit (enough sleep, exercise and good diet), learn on the way and keep organised. Good luck.

Addict yourself to what you want by intending to have it or even imagining that you do have it. This creates the addiction which when fed by the appropriate peptide gives you pleasure. It requires a simple but conscious change in focus.
What most don't realize is that everything that is counter-productive to your desires, such as negative emotions sometimes, or various thoughts or feelings, fairly quickly become addictions which when THEY are fed, produce pleasure. To keep motivated means to keep ourselves addicted to the desired result-producer.

If you have to motivate yourself, you may have lost interest. You may no longer what you originally wanted. Motivating yourself to do something that you don't necessarily want to do is an interesting dilemma.
You may simply be operating out of fear.
If you have to motivate yourself, why do it?

Destroy the idea of your 'self'. Kill every attachment to belief and the social norm that you have been 'condition' to hold dear. Tear down every desire to know 'how' to live. Reject every word of 'advice' including these. Live

try to focus on smaller goals, step by step. When you manage to achieve them, it will keep you going.
