I bought a large regular camp trunk at a yard sale, and it was open, but when I got home it had closed and locked itself. I do not have the key. The lock is a key lock in which a flat metal loop on the top is attactched with a hinge to the base of the trunk. Is there any way, without destroying the lock, to open the trunk?

Most of the trunk locks I've seen have lever tumblers and usually only one. The easiest way would be find somone that has the same brand of trunk because a lot of them were made that all took the same key! I have seen the same thing with suitcases, typewriter cases etc. There are books on picking locks available in most public libraries, it could explain how to do it better than I can here. The other thing, you could try calling some lock smiths, they usually have huge bunches of old keys they've collected over the years, If you bring it to their place maybe they will let you paw through them and see if there is a match. They probably could tell you which style of key would be most likely to fit. These are not like house keys; there was only a relatively limited number of different key shapes for these locks so the probability of finding one that fits isn't that poor.

without too much info on ur post. lets try some simple picking technique

take two medium paperclips and one small paper clip

take one medium paperclip and unfold it so one end is a wire and the other end is doubled you will use the doubled over end to leverage a raking of the tumblers.

the small paperclip will be used as a tension bar. unfold the clip at halfway point and tweak one u on the clip to its smallest form enought to fit in the face opening of the lock.

look inside the lock you will see the tumblers either silver or brass colored. put the small clip on the opposite end of the face. so if the tumblers/pins were at the top of the lock you would put the small clip at the bottom. once inserted apply light pressure.

now take the second clip and place it in your mouth........so u look good while your picking a lock!

take the first med clip and insert it all the way in until it stops....now pull back raking the end of the clip against the pins...this will take several trys but will work.

those type of locks are made to keep out safecrackers....

work out the mechanics of it....you will feel a great sense of acomplishment when you defeat the lock.
