We will be the caretakers. We will have fits and starts but we will survive. We have effected the earth more than any other animal and if we have time we will effect the rest of the universe.
Don't shortchange the effect we have on existence as we know it.
But if the universe existed forever, then we will perish eventually however much we progress and leave no trace of our existence behind. My guess is that the universe will eventually collapse and take us with it.

To the universe, humanity, and even our entire galaxy, is nothing.
A finite value (e.g. humanity) divided by infinity (e.g. the universe)
equals zero.

Humanity is but one of an infinite number of random
physically-deterministic timespace sequences.

As humans, we can effect humanity, albeit in a physically
predetermined way. We have zero effect on the universe.

To grow, to diversify, to connect, and to be part of the Whole where other beings, may it be sentient or non, inhabit our infinite universe. We are very small enough to think of our own world as being all there is but as you would gaze upon the stars, you would realize that maybe our world is not just what matters.
