Why do people say Norton is bad for your computer?

Norton 2003-2006 were huge resource hogs that would slow all but top-of-the-line machines down.

Norton 2007 has been completely re-done and now uses a more reasonable amount of computer resources.

I had a very bad experience with Norton Internet Security. It slowed my computer down horribly and removing it was quite an ordeal. I vowed never to buy any product from Symantec (at least for anti-virus needs) after that. I still think that the Norton Utilities are good (for fixing and preventing problems with Windows and your hard drive).

Opinion varies. PC Magazine thinks the latest Norton is something like the greatest thing since sliced bread...or that's the impression I get...

My personal, very personal opinion is to dislike Norton for four reasons. (1) Their documentation is very difficult to read and non-informative. (2) Their support is very poor and, if acquired in person, extremely expensive. (3) Their software does a poor job of malware detection and removal and must be suplemented via use of other software agents. (4) Their software digs itself deeply into a system to the extent it is EXTREMELY difficult to remove, requiring not only uninstall but also use of utilities acquired from Symantec plus utilities acquired via Google search plus substantial effort on the computer owner's part.

Another personal gripe is the manner in which Norton/Symantec software has "wedded" itself into other products so that trial versions come pre-installed on, for example, Windows systems and Linksys routers...

They've become too expensive. Try this really excellent firewall: http://comodo.com. Nortons has really messed up my computer. After some updates, a lot of programmes didn't work properly. Nortons tends to be too paranoid and sees many innocent things as threats.

It makes the computer run slowly... and, I don't have junk PC's... My Desktop is a 2gb machine and the Lap Top is 2.3 gb and both are less than a year old.

I am now using PCcillian and it runs much faster then Norton

Because they prefer McAfee, and some people automatically assume that whatever they prefer is better than the other options, and therefore the other options are bad. Classic fallacious argument.

Thats just an opinion. In my opinion it is the best commercial firewall/virus protection out there.
