One of the good things about Oscars, (or bad) depending on your view point is they are pigs, and will eat just about anything you put in there. For a healthy thriving Oscar, you'll want to mix up thier diet though. Flakes will work with them, cichild pellets, worms, insects, and live foods as well. As Carson indicated, there is a risk if you use live food, they could carry in disease. If you have a local LFS around and are reputible you could give him/her a small school of guppies, or white clouds ect to chase around for a meal. I'd reccomend giving flakes, with a few days inbetween of frozen brine shrimp and blood worms. Be a little wary on tubifex though. The live cultures I was advised from my local seller, many times are rasied in septic situations, not the best food you'd want your fish to eat. Mealworms are a good choice, and cleaned earthworms as well. Crickets, and flies aren't too shabby either. Some have advised me they can eat vegetables as well, and from a balanced diet presepective, it sounds fine, I just don't know how exactly you'd feed them that.

No to feeders-unless you breed your own, it's a good way to spread disease to your fish/tank. Plus, a lot of times will love the feeders so much, they won't eat anything else. So I'd avoid them altogether.

Earthworms, meal worms, crickets, frozen & thawed bloodworms, frozen & thawed(or fresh from the deli) beef heart, cut up pieces of cocktail shrimp. Keep his main staple food a good cichlid pellet, throw some spirulina flakes in there occasionally, and once or twice a week feed him a pea split open(helps with constipation). The main thing with oscars, you want to vary their diet with a variety of foods. That along with frequent water changes to keep the nitrates down, helps keep away hole in the head disease. Another good idea, pick up some liquid vitamins(people kind) I used the Poly Vi Sol childrens vitamins. Soak some pellet food in a small dish with the vitamins for about 15 minutes, then feed that. I'd do that once or twice a week. Also try looking at www.oscarfish.com they used to have some actual recipes on there that people made up, as well as a lot of other great advice on the care of oscars.

In nature they predominately eat smaller fish. I don't recommend feeding them feeder goldfish or other live fish due to the diseases they can and eventually will bring into your tank. I do recommend buying saltwater fish (freshwater for saltwater fish) like pollack or something else at the grocery store and feeding it to your predatory fish. I also feed a lot of shrimp, crickets, wax worms, and other insects. I also feed frozen peas & zuchini (make sure you cut through the skin). All of these items are fed a few times a week though the majority of the diet remains a good quality large cichlid pellet with a high protein content.

Oscars aren't too picky about what they eat. If it looks like food and it fits in their mouth, they'll probably eat it.

The crickets are one idea, but they would be better as a treat. Oscars will also eat pellets (best as an everyday food), worms, live fish (best not to give them goldfish, though, and feeders should be quarantined for at least a week or two so they don't pass on any diseases or parasites to your oscar), frozen fish, crayfish, shrimp, mealworms, and others. The overall best thing to give them is variety in their diet so they get a good balance of vitamins and minerals from the things they eat.

The only reason feeding your oscar feeding fish might be bad for your oscar is that many times feeder fish bought from the pet store are diseased or unhealthy because they are kept in such poor conditions. A lot of them are crammed into too small of tanks and end up getting ich or fin rot, which they can pass on to your oscar before they die. It's not that feeding him fish is bad, it's just the risk of feeding him ill fish is too great. As long as you quarantine the fish first and make sure they are healthy, or find a breeder with healthy culls you can get, or even better, breed your own feeder fish, they are a great source of protein and he will love getting to hunt and eat live food.

Insects are good, as are worms. I wouldn't feed guppies or other feeder fish unless you breed them yourself (they can carry diseases that can make your oscar sick). Frozen foods are good for the most part, but foods from land animals (beef heart, etc.) should not be fed.
