best thing to do would be go to the dealerships and sit on both the 250 AND the 450...maybe some others aswell
whatever one feels most comfortable to you is best. dont get one you arent sure you cant handle because beginners luck means a lot of crashes on a dirtbike.
obviously 450 is going to have 200 more cc's then a 250 so its going to have quite a bit more power. its is also going to be alot heavier. it might sit a little to high for someone your height though?? im not sure...the last time i got on a 450 i was like 6 (riding on the back of my uncles...im now 15 but a mere 5'3...so as you can imagine something that big is of no use to me! lol). but anyways...my uncle is a big guy...like 6'2 sooo...ya.
the 250 will sit lower and be easier to handle...it will probably be a good first bike. it will have plenty of power. and dont worry about your weight being a factor...both bikes will zip around like crazy with a 200lbs dude on the back no problem.

You definitely do not want a 450F, guardrailjim is dead on with that recommendation. Height is not an issue to consider when deciding between a 250F/450F and your weight is fine for either. Let me clarify that when I say 250F I mean an MX or woods race bike, not an XR, TT-R or some other "trail bike". The 250F is actually a tad bit taller than the 450 on the CRF models. 250 38", 450 37.6". The 450 is also not a lot heavier, only about 12 pounds difference on a CRF but the power of the 450 is too much for a beginner. A 250 2 stroke is not faster than a 450F, but fairly close, and would not be a great choice for a new dirt rider. A 2 stroke is a little, not a lot, harder to ride because of the more abrupt power delivery. I would highly recommend a 4 stroke. I promise you, a 250F will have all the power you need. That aside, the real question to ask yourself is where you plan to ride (trails, MX, both). If you plan to ride MX only any of the big 5 250F's would be awesome. I just bought my first 250F last year and I like it better than any bike I've ever ridden. If you want to do trails and some MX I would go with the "off-road" version of the 250F (CRF250X, WR250F, or KTM 250 XC-F). For serious (A or B class) riders it may be too soft for huge triples and such, but for everyone else these bikes will handle any MX riding you can throw at them.

I'd recommend starting with a 250.
A 250 has more than enough power for the dirt.
Even expert riders could never get bored with a 250.
A 450, or open class dirt bike, is for experts that want more power.
Buying a 450 for your first dirt bike, without ever riding in the dirt, is like a 16 year old that's never ridden a bike, buy a 1000cc sport bike for his first bike

a 250r two stroke actually has a more power than a 450 4 stroke engine. a 2 stroke engine runs at a higher rpm range and has alot more pep.
you would have to almost double the ccs of a 4 stroke to even keep up with a good 2 stroke.
if you are going to buy a dirt bike in the 250 cc range make sure it is a 2 stroke. a 4 stroke won't have enough power for you.
A honda cr 250r is a great bike for beginners and the advanced rider. it can be used on dirt trails, sand, and a motocross trail.

Ricky Charmichael is short. Your purpose could be to not touch the floor...yet to fly over it! It relies upon on what form of using you're doing, while you're basically seeking to putt around, you would be able to choose some thing smaller (one hundred twenty five), yet once you're seeking to bypass racing, you would be able to verify right into a 2 hundred or 250. See in case you may try force a pal's 250 earlier you purchase. in case you experience in the rain and the airborne dirt and dust, that is tough to push a motorbike it incredibly is heavy. My husband is 6 feet, he has a YZ one hundred twenty five and it has adequate power for him.

i would start out on the 250. even thou you have experience on the street dirt is alot different. to me a 250 on dirt is equivalent to a 600cc street bike. both have plenty of power.
