Take away tax benefits for companies that outsource, set up penalties for companies that move offshore.

The corporations do it to lower costs and maximize profits. However, if more Americans were earning more, they'd be able to pay higher prices for American made products. The savings in shipping costs would help offset the increases, and Americans would probably end up with more money in their pockets even after the higher prices. This money would get put into the economy, there would be more taxes collected, there would be more investment, cities and towns with manufacturing would be revitalized, leading to more business growth.

But, of course, politicians are never going to go against those who actually put them in office, so it won't happen.

Tax incentives and penalties for outsourcing.

Lower the corporate income tax (but closing loopholes to ensure minimal avoidance of payment). Lower it to below China's rate of about 20-25%, while slapping fines on companies, a fine that increases with the number of foreigners it employs.

Or create a federal law that bans imports from countries that don't meet our environmental and labor standards. This would have to be implemented gradually over some period of time to give the U.S. time to adjust, as well time for offending countries to comply. It probably wouldn't have an immediate effect, but with the U.S. being such a huge importer of foreign goods, you can bet that these countries would adjust their practices in order to keep doing business with their #1 customer.

As someone pointed out, unionized labor is a problem. The only solution I can see is for labor unions to become multi-national.
Although, I am against unions in the USA, I sure see a need for them in emerging nations. The American worker is trying to compete in labor markets that employ child labor and sweat shops. When you can employ 150 Chinese workers in China for the cost of 1 American worker, it's a problem.

You can increase American jobs every time you buy something made in America.
The economic and social consequences of buying foreign made products more than outweigh any slight or perceived better quality.

Boycott Wal*mart. This is one thing most conservatives probably disagree with me on, but they have done more to hurt the American Economy as a whole than to help it.

They sold out to China a long time ago and I will not support them.

Lower the cost of doing business here. Japan is experiencing the same problem, I think that sooner or later most industrialised nations will face that problem too.

Lower wages in the US, have realistic consumption goals (if you work in the service sector you can't afford a Lexus. Sorry), stop buying every little gadget that comes on the market, dump the unions.
