When a child comes a broken home. When he is in a low income family. When the mother has to be the father/mother. When he is being picked on or threathened. When it is made fashionable by too many (not all) rappers.

Unfortunately gang membership, like many other things, looks attractive right away. Children see it as fun, exciting, and a source of acceptance and belonging. They do not see the dangers and harm in it. It is up to those of us who are older and wiser to educate the younger. The same holds true for pretty much anything. Children follow the examples and teachings of other people in their lives. If adults neglect the responsibility to educate them, then someone else will, either other children, gang members, negligent adults, etc.

When the parent stops being a parent and fails to: a) check on ALL their child's activities and with whom he's doing them; b) spend quality family time with their child; and c) acknowledge that their child is a child and shouldn't have the TIME or OPPORTUNITY to find gang life attractive.

Anytime a child is exposed to it, and doesn't have enough suitable alternatives and support at home.
