I'm assuming they would since a debit card automatically debits your bank account, and the business isn't chancing not enough funds.. but I'm traveling to CA from MT and don't really want to carry a bunch of cash, so I thought a debit card would be easier. But if they didn't accept it, than I'd be in trouble. Thanks!

If it has a Visa logo or a Mastercard Logo then it has to be accepted where ever Visa or Mastercard is accepted. The business is supposed to treat it like a credit card. I guess I am talking about a check card more than anything. I have been using mine for a few years and have never had any problems. You may want to check with bank rules though about limits on how much a single transaction will be and what happens with holds put on the account. Some gas stations will put like a $75 hold on your card to cover gas you are about to pump. If you pump $50, there is still a $75 hold on the card and may take a few days to go away. I have read articles about people who have had their accounts overdrawn because of these holds. So you may want to check with your bank to see how this is handled.

Visa and Mastercard are the two most common and are accepted almost everywhere. Just about any place will accept them - it's rare to find a restaurant that doesn't accept them, for example, and just about any store will take them. I even bought coffee with mine today because I didn't even have the $2 and change in cash, hahaha. You can also withdraw money from an ATM with a Visa debit card without a problem. Many ATMs will charge you a fee for taking out cash if it's not your own bank's ATM - and since we don't have Barclays here you will obviously have to use another bank's ATM and get charged the fee, BUT the fee is usually $2 or less and it's still the cheapest way to get cash as far as exchange rate and the $2 is still a more reasonable transaction fee than most places (change bureaus) will charge. Plus ATMs are everywhere as well

Yes, your debit card will work as long as it's through a nation-wide company like Visa or Mastercard. If it's just a bank card that isn't supported by a larger company, then probably not. For example, if you have a Shazam card, you have to find a Shazam ATM machine, and that can be difficult out of state.
You could consider getting traveler's cheques from your bank. They are safer than cash. If you lose them, the numbers have been pre-recorded, so you just call the bank and have them stopped so they can't be spent, and you still have the money.
Have fun in Montana...it's beautiful up there this time of year!

Take your ID. Almost every place ask for ID in CA, when running the debit card as a signature transaction. If you have only a pin based debit card. They are also accepted at a lot of places provide your card has any of these logos Nyce, Star, pulse, Maestro, interlink. Plus and Cirrus are usually for atm transactions inside the U.S.
Even if the atm say's it does not take your card, it may still work because the networks have shared agreement with each other. I would try to find an atm that won't eat your card.

As long as your debit card displays the Visa or Mastercard logo, it can be accepted anywhere that accepts those...you can even have the merchant run it as a credit card, and it will take it out of your checking account. The bonus to you is: you don't have to input your pin # all the time!

If your debit card ihas a VISA or MasterCard logo (like many banks have now) you don't have any problem.
I have one from Wells-Fargo Bank, and it has a VISA logo and # like a credit card, expiration date and security code on the back,

Yes the debit card will work, You may have to notify your bank of your trip so they do not freeze your accounts. They freeze you accounts when their is suspicious activity. For example the card is being used across the country.
