Another consideration is---How much is the Sunfire worth as a trade in or for sale by owner with a bad trans versus with a good trans---may be better to have the trans replaced and then trade it in on a newer car if that's what you want. Best to buy a 2 year old car to get a lower price and not lose the first two years depreciation yet still have a year of warranty left.
Consider all the options and price out everything first.

It depends...
spend 1000 to 1500 to have the transmission rebuilt or spend 15,000 to 20,000 for a new car....
Also, don't forget to factor in the interest you'll pay if you finance the car...
I know some are quick to jump on the "just get new car" bandwagon, but in the long run, it's just a car that get you from point A to point B.

It really depends on how much you like the car. Is it clean inside and does the engine run well. I would check and see how much it would cost to get it rebuilt. First it is far less for a rebuilt then an new trans.

it will cost you around one thousand... at least. is your car worth that to you? or would be better off with a new one? and of course can you afford that new car payment?
if you decide to change out transmission, shop around. i know where i live, auto shops are competitive, and some will beat other prices, and some are amazingly cheap. shep in your local pennysaver and see if there are any specials going on. anyone in your family mechanic?

That depends entirely upon your attachment to the vehicle, it's overall condition (mileage, any other repairs necessary?, and a host of other items). Personally, since it's only eight years old, I'd go with a rebuilt transmission.

I don't think it's worth the investment. New transmissions are spendy. I would put that money toward a new car.

if you can afford a new car that would be the way to go.
If you get the tranny fixed go to a reputable mechanic not the cheapest
