You have to take a look at the true signs of suicide. When someone thinking about it 95% of the time they draw themselves away from their friends and family. Start to not care about life and try to give away items that are theirs. But the biggest sign that most kids that think about it is self infliction. A study done by the government sorry cant remember which department said that 65% of all teens showed self infliction marks and behaviors before trying suicide.

Emo and punk are actually wildly miss taken and missed informed about. Amo and punk are first two different groups of people. Emo show signs that they care like crying, thoughtful, anger, and happiness. They arent afraid to show it and actually tend to be more on the happy side.

Punk is more a style than a class. They tend to be more aggressive and anti anything usual. But punks are again a style with clothes and less with behavoir.

The main difference is in the life style. The teens that are into gothic/emo/punk are in a community of their own, they listen to a certain kind of music, have a certain kind of hair style- usually black or blue hair dye is common over their very pale skin-, certain kind of makeup, and most importantly a strong case of interaction with eachother that gives them a sense of belonging among the like-minded ones. It's a halloween like phase, and it is definetely not unusual or unhealthy for a teenager to go through that. (Though it is, for a fourty year old.)

However, someone who is contemplating suicide, typically is withdrawn, won't express his feelings and open up to the ones around him- even to the family. The kind of depression he is in comes from the feeling of being trapped in a miserable and unhappy situation that he feels there is no other way out of. He is not fascinated by the fashionable and intriuging side of the gothic movement. He is desperate for a way out, where as you will find a lot of teens in gothic/emo/punk wave, gathered around outside a concert hall.

By the way, emo means being emotional to the extreme and showing these emotions with no holding back to the utmost.
While a typical suicidal person won't open up and will avoid discussing his feelings even with the ones that are closest to him.

Except for bizzare cases like the kool-aid suiciders that were basically cult followers, these are the main differences between two cases.

Hope this helps.

First you have to accept that everyone has the capability of taking their own life. Everyone, even little kids and grownup old people.
Then you have to examine the stigmas behind the taking of one's own life and determine whether or not they are driven by logic or religion.
Then you have to know what drives a person to take their own life.
Then you have to interview the Gothic teens and find out what's really bugging them. For instance, most 'Goths' I knew in high school were all kids being sexually abused by a trusted family member or friend, and were taking the blame of such unwanted attention upon themselves and put on the heavy makeup and black clothes to make themselves as ugly and unattractive as they could to the person abusing them to get that person to ultimately leave them alone. Suicide means they see no other solution or escape from the constant abuse. Hard-core angry music is their only release from the pain they are suffering, acting out is another relase from the pain of the abuse.
Once you get that far, you may be able to have empathy and understanding for those being abused and recognize the symptoms in dress and music preference.

goth, emo & punks are different categories.

Punk culutre does not support suicide at all, as far as I know.
Goths music does take away fear of death, but does not really encourage suicide either.
Emos message is indeed targeted towards suicide, but it makes most people too soft to actually do it.

But music can contribute to pre-existing depression, so you gotta watch for regular suicidal sign, whatever they are. I guess not talking to anybody is a good sign.
