By Africa I mean the sub-Saharan region, the main ('black' as opposed to 'arab') hub of the continent below the conflict of the north.

Was there fighting here? I realise many of the countries were actually colonies of German, Britain etc so what part, if any, did they play? Congo, Togo, Senegal, Rhodesia, Kenya, Madagascar etc etc

Thanks!

Field Marshall Rommel directed his tank corps against the Americans in one of the fiercest battles of the war in Africa. Rommel, who pleaded with Hitler to send him the gasoline necessary to fuel his tanks, was ignored by Hitler, and hi9s tanks became sitting ducks for the Americans. Rommel, also known as the Desert Rat, was one of the finest generals in Hitler's army.

yes. not too many people hear about Africa in WWII. but the fighting in Africa was mainly strategic as opposed to tactical. that is, the fighting in Europe was of priority while, in Africa, it was supportive (with supplies, ammo and such).

one of the most famous battles - the battle of Madagascar - was battled for routes to Europe and oil.
