I have a Pentium II Gateway computer with 400 MHz and 128-258 MB of DIMM RAM Memory for Windows XP Professional Edition. I noticed that when I run photo editor it takes time to startup, and it edits pictures so slow. I also noticed that windows cannot multitask. Do I need more memory if so what would you suggest?

Your PC is WAY below spec to run XP

You have 2 choices - You need at least 512MB RAM to run XP sort of smoothly. I would replace your motherboard and get a faster cpu - at least a 2GHz pentium or Athlon

Alternatively - blow away XP and install Windows 98 instead.

Most computer users have been trained that if you want more speed for your computer, then add more memory. Well, this is true, in certain circumstances. But for most of the times, it really is just bad files in your registry files. Corrupted or missing registry files can make your computer too slow.
The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:

lists top 5 registry cleaner, you can download and scan for free.
Good luck!

Sorry to break this to you but your CPU now works at slower speeds than memory cards....I don't care what upgrade you give the system it's going to be Painfully SLOW....
But yes, put as much memory into the system as it can handle...and that will be the best it can do...

you need to first:

upgrade to 512mb of ram
get at least a 1.6Ghz processor
and free up some space on your hard drive. also, you hard drive should be like a 50gb. drive so you will have a lot of storage, which you then turn into "virtual memory", so if you dedicated 1Gb of hard drive space to virtuaL memory, you can get way better performance

well for that kind of work..i would suggest finding the max memory of that system...hopefully up to 512 MB .... running phot editors etc are memory hogs.

You need a faster CPU and more RAM. I suggest just getting a new computer because you probably cannot upgrade that one enough to make it worthwhile.
