Ok so, I am 14 years old and I have a very long and boring summer ahead of me. Im signed up for no camps and nothing to do. My entire summer is blank excepet for the second week in july when I am going to Brazil for a week. I don't know what to do. I feel like Im wasting my life away not doing anything. I hate it, and I'm constantly bored. My parents won't let me babysit and I can't go anywhere cause they both work. My friends are all at camp and doing other thing...I don't know what to do. I am also really low on cash. I live in a really really wealthy area and my family is well off but they never give me money. I need a job, but no one will employee me. So bottom line...what should I do with my summer?!?!

I actually feel really sorry for you.

You live in a 'really really wealthy area' and your family is "well off" but they never give you any money - well, maybe that's because they see the danger of handing everything to you on a gilded plate and are trying to avoid the risk of turning you in to a bit of a precious. I think they've failed as you say that you are 'constantly bored' - either the sign of low intellect or the sign of someone who has never had to think of anything they can do (probably been paying someone else to think for them.)

How about going to the local library and borrowing a few books and immersing yourself in the classics? How about volunteering at your local animal shelter / charity shop / old folks home? How about finding a camera and creating a portfolio of original images? How about thinking about something that really interests you and creating a website about it?

The things you can do to occupy your time are infinite and endless. They can also be completely free and not cost you a single penny. All you have to do is apply some brain work to it and take it from there.

Who knows, maybe having a summer where you are 'bored' may well turn you into a nicer, more appreciative person in the long run, who realises that it's actually time to take a personal responsibility for your own happiness, rather than expecting your wealthy parents to organise it all for you. (Maybe they were hoping you would sort something out for yourself, but here you are, asking complete strangers instead . . . .)

Good luck. I think you may need it.

You need your parents permission, and maybe a work permit from your school. But 14 year olds can get summer jobs. Both my daughters worked at an ice cream stand in the summer and made pretty good money. Enough that they socked away over $1k each summer in savings plus had plenty of spending money for cloths, going out with friends etc...

The problem for employers with kids under 16 is that they can only work limited hours (~20 hours / week) and must be off the clock/out of the facility by 9PM. Some employers don't want to deal with those restrictions, they get in big trouble if caught. However for some employers it's not an issue (i.e. ice cream stand)

firstly weve all been there at some point i think, when i was your age i wasnt allowed to babysit or anything either but in the holidays i used to ask next door neighbours if they needed any odd jobs doing, i used to wash cars, take dogs for walks, clean windows etc etc. It was a safe and good way to earn a bit of money and also it was doing a good deed! Try it hun, by the time you go to Brazil your pockets will be lined, your mates will be bored and you will be having the time of your life! X

1. Volunteer at a hospital, nursing home or day camp. You are old enough for all three. I think many hospitals still have "candy-stripers".
2. Make regular trips to your local library. Perhaps join a book club there or join one on-line.
3.Ask if your mom & dad will pay for you to have music lessons over the summer.
4. Join the YWCA.
5. Pet-sit or Pet-walk for your neighbors. Earn some cash.
6. See if any neighbors need small chores done around their homes. A young lady at my church gave me a flyer a few weeks ago advertising everything she can do for kids. You could do the same for gardening, pet-walking, light cleaning, etc.
7. See what you can volunteer for at your church. If you don't have one, stop by the local church or synogauge and see if they need any help.

Ask your parents if they would let you volunteer somewhere. The animal shelter is always in need of help, hospitals, parks (check with your city). I think it will make you feel good to know you're giving of yourself to help others. As for the money part... ask your parents if you did things around the house to help them (chores) if they would give you an allowance.
Have you talked to them about how you feel? Maybe they don't realize how bored you are, or how broke you feel. Whatever you do... don't sit around and watch TV or play video games -- that is such a waste of time. Good luck!!

Beg them to let you take some courses at the community center or to volunteer your time somewhere (that shows maturity on your part). See if there is a family friend who would be willing to take you to a summer activity not too far from where you live and then ask your parents if it would be alright.
I'd rather my kids do something than nothing.
Also, in the mean time, pick up a book or learn to do something crafty.

Donate your body to science! Just kidding. Oh, to be 14 years old and bored. I'm twice your age married with kids and I would absolutely love to be bored. Do you know what I would do with my time if I was chronically bored like you? Well, I'll tell you. First, I'd go for a walk or a bike ride. Excercise gives you energy and makes you feel better about everything. Second, I'd read a book or 7. Third, I'd scrapbook! There's plenty for you to do, you just lack the energy and enthusiasm. So first, you really need to decide that you don't want to be bored. :)

You have a computer...you should sell stuff on E-bay.
My son is 17yrs. now and has a job, but the past few summers he has sold things on e-bay. Somethings were his and somethings we gave him to sell and he could keep the money . Have your parents set up an account up for you and you will LOVE it.
It takes time to get to know what you are doing and research.
Look at how others sell their stuff, make temp lets on word documents, all while sitting in your air condition and wearing your pajamas if you want. You get to look at your e-mail and your items selling all the time it is sooooo fun. My son would find things he wanted to sell and then take some of the money he earned and then buy more stuff to sell for more money. You can sell clothes, purses, jewelry, make up, shoes, etc. If your parents set you up to do it, they can set up a student bank account and you can learn to handle our own money, with their help

Good luck, hon.

Ask you parents if you can do any chores around the house for pay, i usually would ask for $5 a job and raise the price if it gets more complicated. Then you can probabley buy into a camp and have some fun

Ask some of your neighbours if you can do odd jobs for them. Even if you only get $5 it's a start and something to do with your time.
