Acceptance requires trust and understanding. When you accept something you are at peace with "it". You allow yourself let go and stop trying to control it. You trust in God or your Higher Power that it will work out for your greater good. You are able to forgive yourself or others involved. You can smile.

When you give up then one or more of the above does not hold true. In either case remind yourself that you are always doing the best you can. This is true, otherwise you wouldn't be here :) Best of luck!

Interesting question. The results are essentially the same -- you put the past behind you and move on. The differences, in my opinion, are in how you process it.

Giving up implies you’ve been forced into believing something. Your novel stinks. Your ex-girlfriend is never going to take you back. You’ll never be a professional bowler. So, you give up. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but you’re probably a little bitter.

Accepting is letting go. You’re at peace. You respect and understand that your initial goals aren’t going to be met, and you’re OK with yourself for not reaching them.

Thanks for asking such an interesting question. I think I babbled through my answer, but it really got me thinking.

i guess when I think of giving up it is in the sense that you could have still gone on... there was still a fight to be faught..

as the saying goes "Winners never Quit & Quitters Never Win"

So a person who "gives up" is a quitter. they just quit ...

but there are times when accepting is all we can do... like when a loved one dies... we have to Accept that fact, and move on. We aren't giving up on them... but we are accepting the reality that they are no longer with us. or another example of accepting is if you have a person you love but you find out they are married.. this is a time to ACCEPT - because they are no longer available - this is not a time to keep fighting for them... It must be accepted that they are with someone else and move on...

I guess for me "giving up" has to do with things that are within our control to do something about and "Accepting" has to do with things that are totally out of our control.

Good question :)

It's a related process. One accepts the reality of a situation, then gives up hopes and efforts in that direction, in order to move on to other opportunities in life.

When you give up on something, in essence, you don't really care about it anymore, you've just decided you are done with it. When you accept something, you see it how it is, you realize you can't change it, and you are okay with that. I think of giving up as a more self defeat thing, as accepting is more of a learning experience and a part of growing up.

acceptance = when something is unable to be changed in any way
giving up = failing to accomplish something that can be changed eventually
