you generally in a song have the drums providing rhythm, the bass providing accompany to the rhythm.
All the other instruments are generally played in the style of 1 leading (eg. i primary instrument taking sound president over others ((which is mostly guitar or piano)).
The remaining instruments in use NOT being president over the others are generally rhythm.
Ie. you can have a lead guitar, and a rhythm guitar, basic rhythm plays the chords and the lead plays the riffs.
It is also important to note that certain songs have specific instruments picked to make a specific sound (ie a harpsichord and a piano, although the same in principle, have 2 entirely different sounds).

you can't have someone singing lyrics in a song, what about the beautiful piano underneath the words? the rhymic drum beat pulling everything together? the guitar playing breath taking chords intensing the mood of the music. sure the voice and lyrics are important, but you need a beginning and an end, not just the middle.

Drums = rythmn, tempo
Guitar = rythmn guitar creates the melody as does the piano.
Bass guitar can carry the rythmn and contributes to the tempo also.
If you take away any of these instruments, it still sounds like a song, but the combination of them all fills out the tune and ensures both melody, tempo and a continuous rythmn.

Drums, being atonal, are used for rhythm work; setting a beat etc.
Piano and guitar, both being tonal string instruments, can be used for rhythm and melody work.
Really, it depends upon the song and the artists' choice for the aural aesthetic.

I don't really understand your question, but I think the answer is: to provide the music for the singer to sing over.
