You can't compare watching a movie to going to a theatre and seeing it live. I would recommend to everyone to see a show live-the movie is more condensed and leaves out a lot of songs from the stage version. If you have the chance, see the stage version-if you're going to be in New York at the end of the summer, Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal will be reprising their roles as Mark and Roger for a six week run, this will give you the opportunity to see some of the original cast live.

I expected much of RENT the movie. I knew many movie musicals were horrible (The Music Man circa 2003). I had hope for this one, with mainly the original cast. How could it NOT be great?
I was disappointed, to say the least. It was RENT, but not really. It didn't tell the whole story. Some parts were left out, parts I thought vital. The direction wasn't that great, either.
You get so much more out of seeing it live, on stage. You get an emotional pull. There is so much energy and I think the stage version tells the story much better.
The musical RENT is far better than the movie.

I saw both the movie and the play. The play (as most plays that are also movies are) was absolutely phenominal, and 10000000 times better. I love the movie, it is also great, but the play just has so much more that you can't see just by sitting at home, the actors and actresses take you farther into the story. The play is also hillarious! I would really reccomend it if you get the chance to see it.

Musicals written to be plays are almost alway better on the stage; whereas, musicals written for the screen are often crappy on stage. I like both versions of Rent even though the singing is more immediate on stage. But at least with a movie version, millions of people will be able to see it rather than the few thousands who see it on the stage -- and it is a musical/movie worth seeing with a fantastic message.

No question, the live stage version is way better. It's great that they got most of the original cast, but some liberties were taken that I just didn't think were on the right track... it was ok, but you have to see in on stage.

the play is better in my opinion. im obsessed with them both. I just thought that the music was better in the play-also, i thought the story lended itself better to being a play than a movie. perhaps its because i saw the play first.
It's nice to know somebody else loves Rent too!
