How can I get rid of unwanted spirits in my home on a long term basis?

There are many forms of Life we call spirits. The poltergeist, (German for noisy ghost), has been studied and found to be young people having stress and thier spirits cause the phenomenon of sounds and things moving around. Can't banish ourself!
There are elemental spirits, which I understand to be the atoms of the spirit world. Just like atoms come together and form material things. These elemental lifefoms come together to help concentrate spiritual forces that in turn create material things.
In many cases, the spirit you want to get rid of has lived there longer than you.
But to make a long story longer. "Banishing" spirits is the stupidest thing people can do. Especially trying to banish them to some lower hell world. Wouldn't that piss you off?
Imagine a White Light of protection around you in your minds eye. And ask our Highest Power for guidance and protection. Our guardians know better what the situation is than we do. It might just be a lost soul who needs some Love, in order to help it find it's way home.

I'm guessing that you are not interested in sending the spirits to the "right place", simply getting them out of your way.

Identify their presence, and find out if they have a reason for being there. If the reason isn't good, then get rid of them, by firmly telling them that you are not interested. If that doesn't work ORDER them to leave your house.

Many different ways of ordering them to leave. If you are a naturally assertive person, just tell them to leave, and they should. A bit of ritual, such as using a bell/bible/magical implement or ritual can help get you be more assertive. see links at bottom A Banishing Ritual is for your protection and piece of mind. It puts YOU in control. Doesn't say where the spirit is to go, simply to leave the place it's currently in.

If that doesn't help seek "professional" help, from a minister of religion/medium/psychologist. Bound to be someone who'll be able to talk through your problem/help at a local pagan moot (a meeting held in a pub, and usually open to all)

(For those who do not accept a spiritual answer, much of the advice should work even if the problem is psychological in origin. The words might be different but the techniques used ARE similar)

1st, stop believing they can bother you. Belief is a way of creating reality.

2. smudge your place, believe in the power of the smudge, use white sage as the smudge. Hold it in your hand, light it up, let it get smokey. Then walk around the house with the BELIEF from your heart that they will leave your presence.

3. Find someone who knows how to do shielding around your home, and have them do a protective barrier around your place. I know how to do this, but you don't know me, so, find someone who can.

4. For the next couple of weeks, before you enter your home, state clearly and with conviction, that all negative energy that is attached to me( you ) is not welcome in your home. This will prevent neg energy from hitchiking into your place by riding on your shoulder, etc.

Find a Celtic Knot symbol, and place it on your front door and back door, this will help prevent any entrance as well.

The best way is to ignore them, pretend they don't exist and if you hear or see anything don't react or get scared of it. After all you have a body and spirit, they only have the spirit so you are more powerful than them. Ignore them entirely and they will soon get bored and go elsewhere to someone who gives them attention. This advice works, I know from personal experience.

i have the same problem, well he/she is not a nusience too us or the kids, but things go missing, and people said they have seen a spirt in the kids room, i myself have never seen it, but i do feel there is something here, i have been advised to see the priest so i have arranged a meeting next week, i advise you too do the same hun goodluck, cool if you could let me know what happens.
I have also been told to walk around the house in the dark with a white candle lite, too cleanse the house, but im a bit scared to do that....

Call up a medium ask them to visit and find out why they wont leave and then have the place blessed with a priest and sage sticks and salt

That really depends on if it is just a ghost or a demon. As for a ghost a simple blessing on you home will accomplish what you need in getting rid of them..... But if it is a demon(fallen angel) then that will take a minute to get done............. tell them to leave! and i'd put up some kind of religious artifact in different rooms of the house- they dont have to be big, just enough so you feel safe. spirits cant hurt you. i know that sometimes in my apartment there is something negative there- but i simply tell it to leave! and then i say a prayer.

Why do you want to get rid of them??
If they are causing a nuisance, stand firm and say out loud, 'Please stop...... as you are upsetting me and my family, Tank you'.
If this doesn't work try burning sage in each room.
