Buy the premium grades. They have more octane and will burn slower/cleaner in your car's engine thus increasing your mileage not to mention save your engine. Premium gas may cost more at the pump but you'll go a lot further on the road.
I have a small car ( KIA ) that gets 34 miles to a gallon when I burn a regular grade so imagine what kind of mileage ( 42 mpg) I get when burning a premium grade. Plus or mid grade doesn't make that much difference compared to regular so go go go with a 92% or higher octane. You won't be sorry!!

Drive sensibly. Accelerate smoothly and evenly. Use cruise control on the open road. Avoid stop and go driving. Heed all speed limits.
Take care of your car. Keep the tires inflated and aligned, keep the car tuned up, don't carry junk in your trunk. Keep the load light as you can. Wash and wax the exterior. Lose the luggage racks and anything else that increases the drag.
The items listed above can increase your mileage 10%.

Of course, there's the obvious -- purchase a model that gets good gas mileage to start with--with gas prices you may even find the extra cost of a newer vehicle is more than offset by it's gas efficiency. ( Depending on what you are driving now and how much you drive compared to what you could purchase)

And do all of the previously mentioned tips.

Keep it tuned up and oil changed regular as mentioned. Tires inflated properly. Then you have to learn to drive. When you see your gaining on the car in front of you there no need to keep gaining wasting gas just to slow down and wear your brakes. Learn to adjust your speed to the traffic. I tell people, if, you have to use the brakes all the time you not driving correct. Brakes are for when you ready to stop. Going down hill let off the gas, again, you keep giving it gas you using more only to have to use your brakes again to slow down.
These thing will not save a lot, but, it can help a little.

Increase driving speed gradually rather than flooring it. And drive 55 on the highways. You probably don't remember the real gas shortage/crisis in the 70's. When supply was truly low, the government rationed gas, and dropped highway speeds to 55 to conserve energy. My husband and I have already dropped our driving speeds, and we are seeing an improvement in our MPG.

Make sure your tire's are properly inflated, keep your car in good working order (oil changes, preventative maintenance) and I always use a bottle of injector cleaner every so often!

Carry as little weight on and in the car as possible and try to maintain a steady speed when you can.
