I got a computer from a friend. When I put in a disk in the D drive, a bubble pops up and tells me of an I/O error for the D drive. What is an I/O error for the D drive and can it easliy be fixed or should I just get a new CD drive?

I/O stands for input/output and essentially means the drive couldn't read the disc, which is what you've already figured out.

More likely is your CD is bad. Second is that you've mistakenly gotten fingerprint grease on your CD drive lens. Rather than rubbing the lens to clean it (it has some fragile calibration), it's better to get a CD lens cleaner, which is a disc with a tiny brush on it that cleans the lens when the drive spins up.

I wouldn't spend any more money on fixing the drive than that since new drives are the same price as the labor to make major repair.

Have you tried other CDs? If not, try that...it might just be the CD is bad. If it happens for every CD you try, the drive is probably bad...check the cables to the motherboard first before buying a new one.

it usually means the drive misread somthing...to fix restart...if it occurs with all disks or when youve already restarted, get a new drive.
