How do you cheer someone up online or over the phone or something? They tell you they're really depressed. You can talk to them, I know that, but talking usually won't make them HAPPY. So what would you do to cheer them up?

Like someone else mentioned, you cant make someone happy. You'll just exhaust yourself trying. What you can do is show you care during difficult times. Be there for them, hear them out & empathise. Sending flowers or chocolate is nice. You can send funny ecards. Joke around on the phone, but dont mock the issue that's bringing them down. But most importantly, if you think the person is depressed encourage him/her to find professional help.

I don't think you can make them happy (as in forgetting about the problem). But I think it depends on the person. So type of people want to talk and just have someone listen, where there are types that would rather have their minds on something else, somewhere else. Know your friend and go with what works for them. One thing for sure, don't bring it up, let them bring it up first.

I had a friend call depressed late one night, and we chatted for a while. I knew we where getting nowhere, so I asked him if he wanted me to come over. Just the fact that I was willing to drive an hour in the middle of the night helped him know he was cared about, and we had a great chat in person, by a big fire in his back yard.
My point is, sometimes on line or over the phone is just not going to cut it. If you can get close enough to physically make contact it can make all the difference.
If you want to know what was in the fire, you will have to choose this as your best answer ;)

show them you care.
let them know youre going to be there for them.
let them tell you whats upsetting them, sharing problems always helps.
dont try and fix their problems. just listen to them.
make them smile. tell a weird/silly/hilarious joke.
for example...

One day in the forest, 3 guys were just hiking along a trail when all of a sudden, a huge pack of indians attaked them and knocked them out.

When they woke up, they were at the leader of the tribe's throne.

The chief then said "All of your lives may be spared if you can find ten of one fruit and bring them back to me."

So after a while the first man returned with 10 apples. The cheif then ordered him to stick all ten of them up his butt without making any expression at all on his face. He had a little bit of trouble with the first one and started crying while trying to put the next one in. He was soon killed.

Later, the next guy came in with 10 grapes. The cheif soon ordered him to do the same as the first guy. After to the 9th grape, the man started laughing so hard for no apperant reason, and was killed.

The first two guys soon met in heaven and the first guy ask the second, "Why did you start laughing? You only needed one more grape and you'd have gotten away!"

The second guy answered while still laughing, "I couldn't help it. I saw the third guy walking in with pineapples."

laughter is definitely the best medicine.
take their mind off it.

when my friends are depressed i do different things, it depends on the person, like if im trying to cheer up dria i first talk about the problem and then say about 3 inside jokes, then i invite her to a sleepover. Crysta is different i just listen to her problem, that cheers her up, and with jessica, we ignore the problem, we dont even discuss it we just play some games and have fun. And with Natasha i listen and give advice. Listening helps alot.

Sometimes it's not possible to "cheer" someone up, certainly not in the limited format of the internet. Maybe just knowing that someone is listening is of more value. Note: You can contribute significantly to someone's happiness if they'll accept it, but ultimately we're all responsible for our own happiness since happiness (like all other emotions) is a state of mind. That said, I applaud your sensitivity.

Try talking about things that THEY like doing. Fact is, most people love talking to other people who are truly interested in them, and they will cheer up if you can help them recall something from their past that they really enjoyed, or talk to them about something they dream about doing.

you can't MAKE them happy, period. talking and listening to what they are saying, acting like your truly interested is the only thing that can help. if you know the person, send her a flower or somethin!
