Tom " The Hammer" Delay was encouraged to resign because of his indictment and the fact that his staying around during that time would have made him the poster child for the Dems in the Nov. elections. If this had happened the year before or now, tommy boy would still be there.

When William Jefferson's house was raided, Nancy Pelosi demanded he step down from the committee he was a member of. He refused but Pelosi succeeded in stripping Jefferson of his seat on the Ways and Means Committee .
They could not expel him because he had not been indicted yet. HOWEVER, they put someone else to run against him for the Democratic nomination, Louisiana state senator Derrick Shepherd and State Rep. Karen Carter entered the race. Unfortunately, this is where the effects of Hurricane Katrina came back to haunt the Democratic party. The people in his district re-elected him in spite of the fact that the Party was not supporting him because they did not want him back.
Now that he has been indicted, Speaker Pelosi is following the rules that they have to in order to get him ousted Expelling a House member before a conviction would be unprecedented. If he resigns he will be entitled to a pension. If she does what she is doing now and he gets expelled, no rewarding corrupt behavior, unlike people like Randy " Duke" Cunningham, and Bob Ney even though they are convicted felons, they still get their congrssional pension. Pelosi tried to get the rules changed to make it retroactive for all convicts but could not get enough votes.

Randy " Duke" Cunningham- kept on Committees AFTER his indictment on bribery charges. He resigned only AFTER he pleaded GUILTY to the charges leveled against him

Rep Bob Ney- stayed on Committees AFTER his indictment on influence peddling. He resigned only AFTER he pleaded GUILTY to the charges leveled against him

Jefferson may have broken the law and it has yet to be determined .
Seems the money he accepted was a bribe to further the business interests of Igate a broad banned marketer .

Actually jefferson was asked to resign shortly after they found the "cold hard cash" in his freezer, but refused.....another example would be Rep. Foley who asked to run for election again even though his "dallyances" were known to republican leadership.
