I heard somewhere that the right ear for peircings was the gay ear. Is this actually the case?

Gay men who originally got their ears pierced did so to signify a sexual preference, with a right ear piercing meaning a submissive sexual role and a left ear piercing meaning a dominant sexual role.

Gradually, it evolved to a man with his right ear pierced perceived as being gay and a man with his left ear being pierced perceived as being straight.

Now, it just means a pierced ear.

(Men getting their ear pierced originated with pirates; the value of the earring was meant to pay for their burial if they were lost at sea and their body washed ashore).

That is not relevant anymore due to the fact that so many guys (gay and straight) have both ears peirced. People were saying which ear was straight and gay back in the 80's.

In the UK, it used be said of a man "right ear, right queer" but I have not heard anyone say that in 30 years !!! I also heard in the 1970s that women who wear ankle chains are prostitutes !!

It's not true.

When homosexuality was illegal, men would smoke a certain brand of cigarettes as a signal and today some gay men use flagging:

"Flagging is a practice of placing a colored handkerchief in the left or right back pocket to communicate a specific sexual desire to be fulfilled by specific sexual acts. Different colors placed in either pocket signify the kind of sexual acts/desire that the person wishes to perform"

Yes, the right ear. Its an element of gay culture, like wearing your keys on a particular side of your belt to indicate weather or not you were a "giver" or receiver". But all of that stuff was prevalent in the 70's and 80's is now severely outdated.

At one time a piercing in the left ear meant the person was gay.

Nowadays it just means that the person has a piercing, nothing more.

ah. There used to be a code concerning which side of your belt you hung your keys from. We had a saying back in the day..."Right side gay, left side straight, both sides janitor." LOL those were the days...

Not any more, especially since so many people pierce both ears.

I don't think that is the case anymore. Maybe in the 70's that meant something
