Well something is amiss, but I wouldn't automatically think of those 2 things. There can be many reasons for sudden weight loss or gain for that matter.
I'd ask them. Have you been dieting, I've noticed you've lost a lot weight? If their answer is not satisfactory, encourage them to get to a Doctor. If they balk, then MAYBE I might suspect drugs or eating disorder. (They could be hesitant to go to Doc because they WANTED to lose the weight.)
Good luck.
Peace.

They could be depressed and not eating at all.
They could be anorexic or bulemic.
They could be using cocaine, crack, ecstacy.
or
If they were overweight they could be using an amphetamine to lose weight like phentermine, adderall or even ritalin.
If the person is proud of their weight loss, I would think they used a diet pill like phentermine to lose it.
Oh, I lost a lot of weight once when I had graves disease, it's a thyroid illness also referred to as hyperthyroidism. I was losing a pound a day, no matter what I ate. I was dying, my eyes were popping out of my head, fast heartrate, shaking, sweating and I had a large lump on my throat, it looke like an Adam's apple. If this person has these symptoms they should go to the doctor right away, I lost about 25 pounds in a month, I looked like a crackhead.

Don't lie and tell them you have an eating disorder when you don't. If you have a drug problem that is affecting your weight and causes you to pass out, then you should probably tell them the truth. But if you want to avoid the whole thing, and don't think you need help, you could always say you were tired, and nervous about school.

The doctors usually suspect drugs, BUT it could be a hard-to-diagnose gastric-intestinal illness such as an ulcer, a damaged spleen, or calcium deposits, which is sapping someone's ability to eat.

Okay, well you would probably have to look into that. I mean, it could be either, so look for more signs of eating disorders and drug addiction.

I usually wonder if they are sick, eating disorder never comes to mind but drug addiction does, sometimes.

I know a chick that i hate that lost a bunch of weight now...she tried telling me her boobs were a 36C..... HAHAH!!! i told her, "dont lie about your boobs when you say your size 2 pants are falling off, because 36 means that you have a big *** chest around, NOT big boobs. and those things are like small B's. when you lose weight fast, first thing to go are your boobs." she told my friend that she made herself puke, but we secretly think its meth. I would love to hit her over the head with a tree limb, for I am a tweaker beater
