Actually Tex Schramm come up with the name "America's Team". He did it for publicity. It worked.
I think you're right. Most of the people that hate the Cowboys, hate them because Dallas has been so good in the past, and they are jealous. Of course the 49'ers have a rich history also, but I don't hear too much about people hating them. It could also be that for awhile there, there were so many Cowboys players, active and retired, that were getting into trouble with the law. Every team has those kind of players, unfortunately, but Dallas is high profile, and it seems to create more media coverage when it happens to them.

I'm a Pittsburgh Steelers' fan, and my dislike for the Cowboys was bred in the 1970s. Having seen George Atkinson's malicious hit on an unsuspecting (not to mention out-of-the-play) Lynn Swann, my impression of Dallas has always been based in that one dirty play. I know it's not how they are now, but it has been in my mind from childhood, so that's my instinctive reaction to Dallas, and I have to fight against it constantly. Having said that, I hope that I can be objective when answering your question about their fans, so here goes: Along with the New England Patriots' fans, Dallas Cowboys' fans (not all, and obviously not you, but MANY of them) are "fair weather", "bandwagon" fans. But in particular: Those with no allegiance to any NFL team are bombarded with the Cowboys' self-proclaimed hype of Dallas being "America's team." And, since New England has been so good recently, and they ARE, of course, called the PATRIOTS, the perception is that it is somehow "un-American" to not root for the Cowboys or Patriots. So while I don't necessary hate the fans who genuinely root for the Cowboys, I DO hate being called less of an American simply because I do not root for them or the Patriots - who, incidentally, have finally been PROVED to have cheated my Steelers in the 2002 AFC championship game. It's just like with Yankees' fans: Since most of them are bandwaggoners, you never can be sure who really roots for the team.

It is because they are consistantly good, have multiple SuperBowl Trophies, and they are completely arrogant about it, e.g. "America's Team". It sucks losing, but it really sucks when you lose to an arrogant team who rubs it in your face. It also doesn't help that they are a fairly newer franchise (with regard to the old NFL, Bears, Lions, Browns, Giants, etc.
If they were a terrible team there would be know reason to hate them. Who really hates the Lions? you cant because there is no reason to, unless you are a Lions fan and are completly fed up with Matt Millen

part of the reason could be that they are in the nfc east, so giants, eagles and redskins fans automatically have a dislike(to put it mildly) for the cowboys. now where are these teams from- new york, philadelphia, and washington. these cities have a large portion of the nation's sports fans. this could account for part of the reason and the rest could be the fact that they have annointed themselves america's team, which is slightly arrogant.

I'll agree, if thats the reason, its pretty ridiculous. Im a die hard Yankee fan, and I think it ridiculous that people hate em just because they are succesful.
The reason I hate them, is not only because Ima Giant fan and they are div. rivals, but because I am orig. from back east, but live in AZ now. Here, its the TRENDY thing to do, call yourself a Cowboy fan. The star looks cool, the colors, the fact that there are alot of other followers makes it easy for others to do the same. But ask em one thing about the team.......They're clueless.

Its the fans, ALL cowboy fans are die hards. We stick with them from good and bad. You never see a cowboy fan on the ban wagon with another team at any time. Another reason why is that when something bad goes wrong its not dwelled on, but when somthing good happens its always a big deal, probably bigger then it is.

For me it started with the misplaced arrogance of calling themselves 'America's Team'. The ONLY place they were America's Team was in Texas. The rest of country never place that name on them and the Dallas fans have never understood that.

i never had a problem with them until jimmy and the boys came around. they were a great team and everyone hated them. plus michael irvin was always doing or saying something stupid. now they have owens.. i think the main reason people hate or don't like the cowboys is their fans

Part arrogance, part mystique. The same thing with the Patriots, Spurs, and Yankees. Once winning becomes a regularity, people then want to see you lose. It's the same thing with opposite teams. People wanted to see the Red Sox win, people want to see the Cubs win.
