So, what is it about Dream Theater?
They're popular around the world, but here (especially in my area), you're lucky to find 10 fans in a given area.
They're an extremely talented band, and wonderful musicians that bust their a$$e$ to make killer music, and I can understand people not liking progressive rock, but it's amazing the amount of popularity they have in foreign countries, such as Japan, Italy, etc.
Any ideas of why this is, fellow fans?

I am a monster DT fan, and I gotta tell ya, I totally agree with your question 100 percent.
The reason why they are so popular in other countries because in European countries they are into music with talent, taste, and proficiency, especially metal bands that do that. That's why bands like Kamelot, Porcupine Tree, and Symphony X do so well over there, as does DT. Europeans don't mind long songs with long instrumental breaks, they can see that these guys are talented.
We Americans live in a generation where everyone likes 2-minute long rap and emo songs. DT's songs are usually longer, and most Americans would not be interested in a 6-24 minute long song, their attention span is too short. However, I feel that all of their music is brilliant.
The final reason why they aren't popular is because of the long jam sessions in their songs. Vocals are there, but usually the instrumentals overpower the vocals in length of time. Our American generation HATES instrumentals. I have talked to several people, and they call instrumental music "boring" and that "music without singing isn't music." It's pathetic.
I think DT should be way more popular, they are all gods at what they do. It astounds me that they aren't very popular. Great question!

Japan and the European countries are a lot more open to different kinds of music.
Jazz Fusion which is similar to Progressive rock is not played all that much on the radio in the United states but enjoys a lot more air time in Europe and Japan. The reason this happens is the same reason that Dream Theater is not as popular in the US as it is in Japan. It is because Dream Theater uses many odd time signatures and most of their music has a complicated rhythm. Many of their songs also lack vocals and have long instrumental solos and intros.
Also most of the Dream Theater compositions are very long. On the latest Dream Theater album they have a song that runs for 40 minutes.
Most of the songs that are on the billboard run for a maximum of three and a half minutes.
Their song Pull Me Under which is their most popular song and was number on the mainstream rock charts originally ran for 8 and a half minutes. When it was played on MTV it was shortened to 4:48 minutes and many of the good parts were removed which included the shortening of the instrumental intro.

I suspect foreign countries (ie: outside of the US) generally have better attention spans than your average American. Seriously. For ex., in the 70s, Genesis was a big hit in Italy & the UK, before becoming a huge sensation in the US....by the 80s & After they'd gone from progressive to pop.
Over here, too much (newer) music you hear on the radio is like fast food & sadly, that seems to be what the US masses want.
Hopefully, there'll be backlash against mediocrity soon....

Because, sadly here in the United States, it is all about the flavor of the month. If radio doesn't play it, many teens don't know about it because frankly their intellect level is lacking these days. You have to seek out good music like Dream Theater (who I love) In the U.S. most people seem to be into the flavor of the month. For example, I still can't believe all the people who care about American Idol. I watched the show once, was bored silly, and realized the performers on that show haven't paid their dues.

i have no freakin' clue! but it sucks. I think they are very very talented.....my dad loves them! one day we were at the mall and some kid wearing a Tool shirt said "HEY sweet dream theater shirt" and then at best buy later on, this guy wearing another dream theater shirt saw my dad's shirt and complimented on it too haha. So every now and then we run into a fan but not recently...... I think everyone is too simple minded and brainwashed by all this emo **** to appreciate 20 min long songs

people in america aren't as cultured as ones in other parts of the world. western civilization is poisoning the rest of the world's cultures and it's sad. we can't seem to leave well enough alone. i love dream theater and agree about their talent. other countries just have yet to be poisoned is all that i can come up with.

I know what you mean. I love their music but a lot of people i know here in the UK seem to slag them off. But someone must like them here because their latest album has entered the charts this week at No. 25.
