THEY HAVE BEEN MISSING CALLS ALL SEASON LONG. THAT'S ANOTHER REASON.

They just want to throw their weight around to show the players and coaches whos boss. I think there should be some sort of glasses with a virtual strikezone in them they could line up with the plate and batter, also with some sort of image burn in from the white ball so that it stays on their little screen long enough for them to tell if its touching the strike zone or not. There are way too many umps calling unfair strikes; or at least lately, they have really widened the zone.

As far as ejecting people, its getting out of hand. Id say one hit batter is an automatic warning and a second is a toss.

No, I think the umps still "humanize" the games. We need the umpires to call balls and strikes; not some d* machine. They can still argue with the coaches and toss 1/2 the bench. I am a nostalgic fan and do not want to see the game change anymore than it already has (this goes for the NBA (7 games series on everything, geesh) and the NFL (no clothesline tackles and protect the QB--let's just put red jerseys on them and black helmets like in practice and nobody touch the QB). But, I digress.

Lou Pinella throwing dirt on the ump, classic. Surely we loved the old school Billy Martin. I like the tribute. cant remember the umpires name but "Steeeeeerike Three."

If you are just referring to this one event the issue actually goes back to the day before when Alfonso Soriano had three homeruns and than got hit by the pitch. Ted Lilly hit Renteria the next day because he also had a homerun the day before and it was payback time. The umpires were well aware of what could happen and ejected Lilly before any further problems occurred. To answer your question, with everything considered I believe MLB umpires do a good job.

I was watching the Cleveland,Cincinnati series this weekend and I saw so many ball and strikes calls being missed I thought a 5 year old was umpiring! It seems like the umpiring in MLB this year is terrible! Something really needs to be done!

There's no way Wolf should have tossed Lilly without having warned the teams before the game started that he'd be looking for anything like that. It was a clear case of an ump overstepping his bounds.

In general, I think they do a good job. However, it's those few power-trippers - guys like Wolf, or others who will get right up in a guy's face when they argue - that make the rest of them look bad.

i get you point but it's the umpires call. if he thought he intentionally hit him then the umpire has the authority to throw him out of the game.

He even said, the ump, "i was waiting for it" If you are waiting for it tell the teams before the game so you dont drastically change the game by taking out the starting pitcher in the first inning.

Yeah. Luvable Cubs! Can't win. . .umps fault. Can't win. . .fan's fault. Can't win. . .media's fault.

Umps do fine. It's the Cubs, historically and otherwise, who have trouble controlling themselves.
