system restore
first click on my computer
choose properties
then on system restore
make sure system restore is checked
then shut down
then
1- click start at bottom of screen
2 - then click choose all programs
3 - then click pc help tools or could be in accessory's
4 - then click on system restore
5 - then click on restore to an earlier date or factory settings
6 - choose a date when it was working - or factory settings
7 - let it run it may take a while - follow directions - if any
8 - restart THEN CHECK STATUS
choose destructive recovery as last resort you will have to look hard to find this option
i don"t know your computers options etc
BUT that's what it took to restore mine to get settings i wanted etc
BACK UP IMPORTANT THINGS TO CD NO MATTER WHAT OPTION(S) YOU CHOOSE

after restore you need to make sure you have all windows updates
after that do this

go to start (in the blue bar)
control panel
security center

if it gets to the system is restoring screen it means its trying to restore to a previous date that you selected, and when you are able to log in its finished. but if you want to just completed erase everything and start new, then get a windows cd pop that in the drive, then shut down the computer and startup and go into the setup mode (usually pressing F10 or del) when the computer is booting up. set the cd drive to first boot device, then boot from the cd. you will have options to format and create partitions, all you have to do is delete the partition that is there and press enter to install windows on that raw space and it will do the partition for you and you should format to NTFS and away you go

System restore only restores Windows to an earlier date. Any other software that you have installed on it will still be on it after you restored it to that earlier date, with Windows, any upgrades or patches that you may have downloaded will get kicked of and you will have to reinstall them all over again.
