Babies don't cry out loud in the womb because their lungs are filled with fluid. To make sound, oxygen leaves the lungs, passes by the vocal cords and make the vibration that produces sound. When there is fluid in the lungs, this process can not happen. That is why a baby's first cry is so important. It tells the doctor that the baby's lungs are working. Babies still do have a personality in the womb and have likes, dislikes, and get uncomfortable. So, they may show facial expressions and even mock, or practice crying. Crying is an instinct that developes early on in deveolpement, but it is not audable untill birth and oxygen has taken the place of the fluid.

Haven't u ever noticed why the doctor smacks them on the behind when they are born? So they cry which means they are taking their first breath of air in the world. They breathe through the amniotic fluid in the uterus. So they can't cry if they are not breathing thru their mouth. They are breating thru their umbilical cord attached to the MOMMa!

Who says they can't? There have been studies that have shown a baby at 28 weeks gestation crying in the womb when startled. It's not the same since they are under water, but it's basically the same thing.

There is no air in the womb. The lungs cannot inflate, which is necessary to cry audibly.

While they can't make noise since their lungs are filled with fluid, I'm sure they do cry in that they have the same emotions and facial features. I'm pretty sure my little guy was crying the other day when he whacked his foot off my rib, I know I was ready to!

They yawn and hiccup by 3 months - they may cry as well and we just don't know.

The only thing they could do is make facial gestures like smile or frown. They can't actually make sounds until they're born.
