Usually a player will be drafted. Once in a while a player may impress someone at a tryout, but then the would have to be signed as a free agent. Tryouts could be open or closed.

Most MLB teams have some open tryouts. Like in the movie "The Rookie", some teams hold them to get unknown players. You have a much better chance of being drafted if you are in college or high school and "tearing it up"

the best shot at a professional team is being scouted, followed by being drafted in the entry draft
there are many players who are scouted, but are undrafted, and they become unrestricted freee agents, and can sign with any team who offers them a contract
in the spring, teams invite certain players to spring training. these invitees are current roster members and free agents usually
as far as tryouts go, very few teams have open tryouts. usually the worst teams are the ones who host occasional open tryouts. you wont see the yanks or mets having open tryouts anytime soon.

Players have to be invited to a tryout, they just can't show up. Team scouts are well aware of the prospects out there and if you are good enough to get an invitation they will find you.

I'm not positive, but I think they have open tryouts. You have a better chance if you are invited, though.
