I've never read these books and I've never had any interest. Neither have my kids. Frankly, I don't feel like we are missing out on anything but a ton of hype. Anyone feel the same way?

No...no pressure to cave in to the crowd and read them. I'm more annoyed by all the press paid to these books when there are so many great books that don't get nearly this level of attention.

No - I too have taken no interest.
Sounds like you are an individual who knows her own mind.
Just because everyone is talking about something - doesn't mean we have to follow the pack.

I detect that you are feeling some pressure to give in and buy or check out the Harry Potter books. Don't do it. I actually read the first five books recently, and they are so, so terrible. I don't mean the story that Rowling steals from other fantasy writers is terrible, but the actual words and sentences could have better arranged if drawn out of a hat.
You are a better person for not giving in to this illiterate fad.

I am sure that you're not the only one that's not interested in the Harry Potter books. No one will force you to read any of them, but if you feel like giving them a chance you may be very pleasantly surprised. They are well written and seem to appeal to kids and adults alike which is definitely a rarity nowadays. JK Rowling is extremely good at creating a convincing little universe in which her charaters exist.

I'm not a huge fan like a lot of people. I do like the movies though - I find them entertaining. I tried picking up the first book a couple times and tried to read it but couldn't really get into it. I have heard a couple of the books on tape though...
I think J.K. Rowling was very smart. She got a huge fan base.

Its not a big deal that you are out of the loop that is your choice. But it never hurts to give the books a shot! I read them and think they are very good! It is all about what you want! The choice is up to you!

I read the first two, and couldn't see what the fuss was about.
(Though I'm in favour of almost anything that gets children reading!)
They are not well written and there is so much that's derivative to anyone who's read much in the fantasy genre.
Or British "School" stories...
"Billy Bunter with broomsticks" was one succinct review I saw.

In my opinion, you're not missing out on anything. I read the first HP book and didn't like it. I think it's poorly written. The storylines are sort of clever, but certainly not (as my teacher always says) in the same league as Tom Sawyer.

Acutally a lot of people haven't read them, so you're in good company. However, I used to be one who thought they were all hype and then I picked one up. Needless to say, I'm hooked. I love books and these reminded me why I love to read, after four years of studying literature had desensitized me a bit.

It's not a problem if you're 'out of the loop.' Honestly, I don't think you're missing much. The stories were good but they have lived their life so to speak. Besides, the writing style could be alot better.

you are not missing out on anything. I've read a few of the books, they are really good...but nah. Not that big of a deal.
it's cool you're not out of the loop...you have just found smarter things to fill your time with! =)
