I witnessed a very rude, unnecessary encounter in parking lot - is this what society is like today?

Went to Walmart the other day, a man was minding his business, walking in the parking lot, wearing Yankees sports gear - hat, t-shirt.

A punk plump teenage girl viciously said to him, "Yankees suc", he replied without missing a beat, "F@T people suc"!

They went onto to exchange a few more foul words with him ending it with, "Keep it up and I will drill you into the ground"!

Is this what society has become in this day and age?

Is that man justified to retaliate as he did?

Yes he was justified to respond like that, so long as he didn't actually do anything.

There are some fat, unattractive people who say mean things to people, just because they want other people to be miserable.

Neither can be justified.
She provoked the argument and he just retaliated. This is usually seen more between children than an adult and a teenager. It is sad to say that this situation is normal among humans. I hope that, after the argument, they both felt humiliated for arguing about trivial matters, in the middle of a Wal-Mart parking lot, in the first place .
The better thing for the man to have done would be to have walked away without antagonizing the provocation.

I do not think this man was justified to do this. The punk girl could have not said that the yankees suck, but that is her opinion on a team. Now the man has to reply with "Fat people suck" that is almost like being racist. He had no right to say that. He is supposed to be mature and ignore what she said. Not go in to this whole argument. I am 12 and I am writing this. I think this is what our "society" has become today. Thats how mature I am. Trust me, I sound more mature than the guy right now. I hope this helps!

If you have bad information, and it later turns out you were wrong, you aren't considered 'lying'. Even if Bush knew there weren't any there, there is no proof, and if a normal citizen can be innocent until proven guilty, then surely the president can be, as well. To answer your question, I would think that Iran would be justified. However, how are we going to know that it wasn't justified? Plus, if you can't tell which side of the United States both Israel and Iran is, then you truly have your head in the sand. I don't buy the fact that Israel is all innocent, but so far, they are our allies, and Iran would love nothing more than to nuke us out of existance.

Yeah the teenager started it, most of them have little to no respect for the elders now anyways. He could have taken the moral high ground and let it slide though. He was supposed to be the more mature of the two.

Even if it escalated as it did for him to threaten a teenage girl with physical violence is not justifiable. Call me old-fashioned but I think the MOST cowardly thing a man can do is to strike a woman.

You should be able to walk from point "a" to point "b" without some verbal assault-no matter what's on your t-shirt
I have to wonder what she thought the reaction would be- I don't necessarily agree with him being hateful (and making a comment about physical appearance is such a cop out) but it's hard to be the bigger person when you're just yelled at for no reason trying to just go buy some paper towels or whatever-

Probally not but the girl should of kept her opinions to herself. I guess once you open your mouth you deserve what you get. He should have been more "adult like" and handled it better and 2 WRONGS do not make a right. Society is like that. You can get killed for saying the wrong thing to the wrong person. In todays world you are better off minding your own business.

she shouldn't have opened her mouth in the first place....but he should have just ignored it... He is in the wrong with his comment because that is a threat and he could end up in jail...

I have had problems with the neighbourhood kids and not being given any respect I had a 14 yr old boy tell me where to go.... he changed his tune when my hubby said he would knock him down a size and told his parents....

It is how kids are raised today... we are not alowd to punish them the way we were punished.... there is no respect and there never will be until the laws are changed....

Making an idle threat's not the same as following through with one. She insulted a perfect stranger, while his retaliation may have been extreme, in this day and age, i think she got off easy. Maybe she'll learn to keep her big mouth shut.

That's a yes and no. No, because the man could have ignored the comment and been the bigger person in that scenario and yes, because simply speaking, why should he ignore it? he was minding his own business and this person ventured into the man's universe. If you dish it you better be prepared to get some in return.

Sure. Down here someone would have just shot the girl and kept on walking.

Fan vs Fan violence is the number one chance meeting killer of people the world over. But the killings are a lot more organized in Europe than they are here in the US.
