I would advise you research any company you are going to do business with. If you don't do your homework chances are you will end up on the short end of the stick.

A pool is a huge investment. Would you buy a car without researching it? Would you put an addition on your house without doing some research? In other words, who spends $20,000+ without ensuring they are making a good investment?

Local companies have more at stake that larger nationwide companies do who rely solely on their name. Local companies have a reputation to uphold, and can make autonomous decisions without reporting to corporate. I would much rather deal with a local reputable company than one whos decision makers are in another state.

Here are some websites of national pool associations that will help in your search to find a pool contractor. Also check www.bbb.com and your state contractors license board.

It's human nature to try to save a buck. Problem is, it usually costs more than it is worth. I don't go by size of the company, I check how long they have been in business and ask for referrals. You also need to look at the season when you ask for a pool to be installed. If it is the busy season, you may have to wait in line. I ask this when writing a contract.
