Well that is generally right but in this case (pain) the receptor neuron sends it to the spinal cord and the spinal cord sends a signal right back to either stop cutting or pull away etc. This is called the reflex arc.

Also for a normal reception of a simuli it goes from receptor neurons into sensory neurons which go to the spine and then the brain then motor neurons send back a reaction.
There are also interneurons which are inbetween motor and sensory neurons.

There are pain receptors in your finger (along with other sensors, like temperature and pressure) that will trigger nerves when stimulated. these nerves carry the signal to the spinal cord, and through a series of connections, eventually ends in the part of your brain where you recognize the signal as pain. Often the nerves that carry pain signals are also connected to motor nerves that trigger muscles, so that if you touch something painful, you may react by pulling away automatically before you realize what the pain is from.

The nervous system tells us something bad is happening and sends it to the brain. The brain sends pain back because its saying something bad is happening to your finger so pull it away immediately. Same thing if you put your hand on a stove.

The nerves in your finger send signals to your brain. You feel pain because it is your body's way of tell you something is wrong physically.
