"WHY"....from old english "hwi", instrumental case (showing for what purpose or by what means) of "hwæt" (what), from proto germanic "khwi" , from proto indo european *qwei, locative of *qwo- "who". These uses go back thousands of years. It's use as an interjection of surprise or to call attention to a statement was recorded from 1519.
